Whether his decision to leave is proven right or proven wrong, we should be grateful for what he did for Sunderland Football Club. I don’t think it was totally one-way, these things rarely are, but it happened and we’ve moved on. At the end of the day, you’ve got to thank him for what he did, how he turned the team around, and now this season’s been generally good, and he had a positive effect on several of the players who are now doing well for us.
There’s a January transfer window coming up – where do you think we should be looking to strengthen?
I never like to pick out individual play- ers, but I think we still need another holding midfielder with experience.
Dan Neil is a lovely mover, he can be
a top, top player and he passes the
ball really well, we’ve seen his passing to set up some of those goals we’ve talked about. I’d like to see him score
a few more goals, though, and while Corry Evans has done great, we need cover there to help those two out when injuries and suspensions hit. Obviously up top, as the injuries have shown,
and I don’t know where we’re looking, possibly abroad, or a youngster we can polish up, but I reckon that’s the way the club is going.
Thanks, Gordon
Any time. I’m off now to do some coach- ing with the kids, along with Benno.
managerial appointment was the right one as well, Tony’s a good guy and a steady hand on the ship.
So, have we finally turned that elusive corner?
It’s been really positive since the turn of the year, really, and it all came together nicely at the end of last season, at Wem- bley. It was a great day. We were by far and away the better team on the day, and with all due respect we should be, we’d been at that level far too long. Wycombe, again with all due respect, shouldn’t be able to beat Sunderland on that sort of occasion. The previous years had been awful times, and it was great to see so many former players among the crowd showing everybody that there’s so many people who really care about the club. Everybody was hoping and praying that that day was going to be a catalyst for something new, and it was so important to get out of that league. It is what it is, really tough to get out of and it’s so easy to become an accepted Third Division club, which was the last thing we wanted. I’m so pleased that we did get out, and I’m not one of the Alex Neil haters, I’m the opposite. He did a great job for our club, and we wouldn’t be where we are now
if it wasn’t for him, that’s for certain. We weren’t going up the way it was, there’s absolutely no doubt about that, and what he did from when he arrived got us up. We all make decisions in life, so let him get on with his and good luck to him.
