DEADLETTER
AT HEAD OF STEAM, NEWCASTLE
PALOOKA 5
AT THE GLOBE, NEWCASTLE
Hoverboarding into The Globe on Friday 16th September is Palooka 5, straight from the future of your Spotify wrapped. They’re based in the South West but their music comes straight from Planet ‘Nam, with sci-fi-inspired surf music, including classic surf guitar riffs fit with hammond organs and...theremin? They're weird, wonderful, just completely wild and made up of married couple Tim, who sings and lays down some funky lead guitar, and Bethan Baigent, who joins him on vocals while adding to the percussion with tambourines and maracas as well as playing live theremin (a pretty complex and hard to play instrument that gives them a technical edge over other bands). The other three Palookas are (the appropriately named) Si Fisk on bass guitar, sending those driving basslines to get your body shaking, with Hammond organ and synths provided by Alex McCallum, whose sweet solos and melodies transport you back to the ‘60s, and lastly, Steven Bide brings the grooves in full-force on his drum kit. Together, they’re all decked out in ‘Apocalypse Now’-esque Vietnam gear; however, those aren’t the only unique outfits you might see on stage. Palooka 5 have also been known to enlist the help of 60’s go-go dancers ‘The Go-Gets’, dressed up in neo-futuristic silver short shorts, knee-high boots and crop tops, with pink bob-cut wigs and tiny laser pistols. To date, the outfit have released two albums, their debut ‘Rough Magic’ featuring ‘Debbie Don’t Surf’ that’s received frequent airplay on BBC Radio 6 and in America, as well as their second album, ‘Ultra Marine’, released in 2021. Due to the success of these albums, they’ve managed to tour across the globe, including sell-out shows at venues such as Club Kongo and the festival ‘Taunton Live & Pride’, playing to over 5000 people.Supporting them is Moron-o-Phonics, a bluesy band featuring a rare singing drummer, groovy walking basslines and surf guitar riffs. Their motto reads: “Outta time, outta tune ‘n’ outta sight” - but that won't stop them, and you, from having a good time and getting ready for Palooka 5. If you want a night that makes you want to hit the waves, or just the dancefloor, then head to The Globe, Newcastle on Friday 16th September. ADAM BRACCHI

Post-punk outfit Deadletter, hailing from Yorkshire, now rooted in South London, return up north as they prepare to play the Head of Steam in Newcastle later this month. Channelling the uncomfortable energy and politics of classic post-punk bands like The Fall and XTC, with a modern touch of Yard Act and Tropical Fuck Storm (both of whom they’ve previously supported), Deadletter have received consistent high-praise from Steve Lamacq - and their support from the BBC has earned them slots at the likes of Leeds Festival. For a fascinating night with an exciting and furious new post-punk band, join Deadletter at the Head of Steam on Friday 16th September. ADAM BRACCHI
