    RISEFEST
AT NORTHUMBRIA STUDENTS’ UNION
Anyone familiar with Newcastle’s renowned nightlife will certainly have an awareness of Rise. The Saturday stronghold has become a safe haven for alternative minds to convene for a night of loud, hectic energy. With the music ranging from Limp Bizkit and Fleetwood Mac to Slipknot, the many rooms of Greys Club are filled with exciting and expansive hits from across the decades. With its reputation rooted in its alternative brand, the nightclub holds the monopoly on a specific and often underrepresented subculture in Newcastle, one that is alive and well, brimming with life. Hell-bent on celebrating the Moshers, the Goths, and the Metal Heads, Rise have been giving the Newcastle community exactly what they need over the past decade. Now, with all the momentum they have amassed, Rise are taking one step further in their celebration and are delivering their own phenomenal festival. Brought to you by the same minds that entertain each Saturday, Risefest is a day-long festival dedicated to showcasing and enjoying the marvels of the British rock scene. With an ardent belief that the North East is long overdue its own rock festival, Risefest is slamming our name on the map once again. While often overlooked or glossed over, there is a vibrant and bustling world of rock musicians across the north, which the festival is eager to parade. With many of the festival's slots being filled by talented local musicians and the venue filled with pop-up vendors from local businesses, Risefest feels incredibly earnest in its love for both the music and the people who embody it. With the festival’s debut already accumulating a staggering assortment of names, the Saturday activity is not one to be missed by anyone with a fervent love for the genre. Drawing names like Boston Manor, As December Falls, Vukovi, Higher Power and Creeper, the day is slammed with some of the country’s most dynamic names in the field, until festival headliner and musical titan Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes close the night with a performance which promises to be nothing short of impeccable. No stranger to The Toon, the notoriously engaging, barbaric and endearing Frank Carter holds a reputation as a showman tour de force which has to be seen to be fully realised. With every act of the day contributing to a new era of Newcastle’s music scene, Risefest is a proud love letter to those who have filled the dancefloor each Saturday and the music which inspires us all to party. AT THE CLUNY, NEWCASTLE
BLUE ORCHIDS
AT WESTGARTH SOCIAL CLUB, MIDDLESBROUGH
Blue Orchids were formed in 1979 by guitarist/vocalist Mark Bramah following his departure from The Fall. Whilst never as famous or prolific as his previous band, Blue Orchids carved a reputation as cult favourites in their own right, releasing a flurry of singles on labels like Rough Trade, whilst also serving as the backing group for the enigmatic Velvet Underground collaborator Nico in the 1980s. Periods of inactivity have been punctuated by several well-received releases and live performances since, with the band now scheduled to play at the Westgarth Social Club in Middlesbrough on Saturday 24th September, with support coming from West Yorkshire's Klammer. Considered to be at the forefront of the Brit-pop revival, Liverpool-based Courting arrive at The Cluny in Newcastle on Friday 23rd September with considerable industry chatter surrounding them. Combining a distinctly British post-punk vibe with nods to American indie-rock like Pavement and LCD Soundsystem, Courting's sport-themed hits like 'Grand National', 'Tennis' and 'Football' have earned them high praise from the likes of BBC's Steve Lamacq. After several sold-out shows in their home city, Courting hit the road in support of their forthcoming debut album, 'Guitar Music', which is due for release on the day of the Newcastle gig, with an in-store date also taking place at Reflex CD.
