LOS BICHOS
AT STAR AND SHADOW CINEMA, NEWCASTLE
Thanks to the Star and Shadow Cinema, the sound of South America is heading to Newcastle on Wednesday 21st September in the form of Los Bichos. Although the group are based in London, their pan-continental influence is bringing a hallucinogenic surf-exotica soundscape to audiences’ ears with an evocative and playful performance style. Taking a mixture of Argentine Cumbia, Peruvian chicha, and Anatolian psychedelia, and combining them with guitars and groovy instrumental rhythms, this female foursome are bound to get you feeling the fiesta as you lose yourself in the music and let go to the flow of the soundtrack of life. ALLEN VALLEYS
FOLK FESTIVAL
ALLENDALE
The Allen Valleys Folk Festival was first established back in 2014 and has become a staple event in the North East calendar, with the festival returning to us this year between Friday 23rd and Sunday 25th September. Attendees can expect a whole host of festivities that will celebrate the best of folk music, traditional folk dance, and there are also a variety of workshops for people to participate in. There will also be the traditional mid-event spectacular in which the Allendale Market Square will host the burning of a majestic wooden sculpture that represents the legendary Allendale Wolf. In terms of musical talent, there will be no shortage over the course of the weekend. On Friday evening, you can check out Diddley Squat, a Northumbrian reggae troupe who are guaranteed to get audiences joining in with their passionate and rhythmic output at the Golden Lion. The King’s Head will be playing host to the fun-loving Geordie trio Belta Reivers who will reinvent some local traditional songs and also share music from across the world. St Cuthbert’s Church will welcome two talented artists too including Liverpool singer- songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mikey Kenney who performs music that is ‘from the heart, to the heart’, as well as Whiskey Moon Face who perform with everything from an accordion and double bass to sax and piano. Top talent will carry over into Saturday with the afternoon and evening filled with a little bit of everything. There will be performances from Chris Ormston and his mastery of the only indigenous English instrument, the Northumbrian pipes; Brothers Gillespie will evoke the Northumberland spirit through music and song; The Salt Cutters’ Family Ceilidh, containing fiddler Mikey Kenney and sean nos dancer and caller Maria Malone, and bringing all of the rock spirit combined with African traditions will be Tiwiza. Closing out events on Sunday will be George Welch and Christine Jeans bringing wit, wisdom and musicianship to regale audiences with their talent. There will also be a performance from Scottish folk group Talisk who have emerged onto the folk scene with explosive energy. With a plethora of musical talent on offer and a number of workshops and other activities to participate in, this year’s festival is one you do not want to miss out on. GEORGINA SHINE
