COMEDY
The Hilarity Bites Comedy Club rolls into Hops & Cheese in Hartlepool on Thursday 4th August, with the venue playing host to a bulging bill topped by Tom Taylor and dubbed “Hilarity Bitesize New Act & New Material Night”. Taylor is a more than worthy headliner with an idiosyncratic approach to musical comedy, poised to add to a growing legion of fans. Wielding a stock keyboard, which he will turn to without warning at any moment, the 2015 Yorkshire Comedian of the Year boasts significant BBC radio backing, glowing acclaim and the golden ticket of offbeat comedy approval in the form of a support slot behind Simon Munnery. Running the gamut from intelligently realised to downright daft, Taylor’s work continues to mark him out as a talent to monitor. Supremely energetic, characterised by a barrage of ludicrous one-liners and sometimes incorporating a surprisingly generous dose of physical comedy, Taylor’s gigs always come with the feeling that anything could happen next, the certified promise of an increasingly riotous atmosphere and the guarantee of uncontrollable cackling from attendees. Furthering the diversity of the line-up is Chris Brooker, bringing to bear his notable pedigree as an MC as well as a bona fide stand- up performer. Brooker’s comedy is delivered with a slam, sometimes with brute force but just as possibly with the joy and magnetism which make his work so ultimately attractive. A kinetic performer with international experience, Brooker has laid down creative roots across North America as well as the UK and has three solo shows to his name. The real kicker is his improvisational ability, which is testament to his work as a compere. Comfortable and confident in any room, Brooker is witty, disarming and effortlessly popular. Newcastle’s Tony Jameson will also grace the evening to provide a local twist to proceedings. Jameson is renowned for his singular style of spinning a yarn and taking an audience on a ride, making him a hit prospect over the past decade. Famed within the web which comprises the UK’s comedic ecosystem of clubs and rooms, Jameson is highly respected, especially for his debut show ‘Football Manager Ruined My Life’, an historic Edinburgh Fringe favourite. Excitingly, Jameson will act as host for the night, a role he is accustomed to but which will nonetheless heighten the unpredictability. Also promised is additional support from new and established acts alike, rounding out a packed evening. MICHAEL JOHNSON
