ART
As part of BALTIC’s ongoing exhibition strand exploring play, they will present the fascinating Mythmachine by artist Sahej Rahal, on display from the 24th September 2022 until the 3rd September 2023. Mythmachine comes from the future and will transform and expand in response to players. It is a site for the rehearsal of cohabitation between human and non-human systems through speech, song and rhythm. This new body of work has been conceived as an immersive virtual playground that responds to chaos, luck and chance. Primarily a storyteller, Sahej Rahal weaves together fact and fiction to create counter- mythologies that question narratives, shaping the present. His myth-world takes the shape of sculptures, performances, films, paintings, installations, and AI programmes, drawing from various sources ranging from legends to science fiction, creating scenarios where beings emerge from the cracks in our civilisation. Rahal received a Diploma in Fine Arts in 2011 from the Rachana Sansad Academy of Fine Arts and Crafts in Mumbai. He is a celebrated artist who has participated in both solo and group exhibitions including the recent Gwangju Biennale, the Liverpool Biennial, the Kochi Biennale, the Vancouver Biennale, MACRO Museum Rome, Kadist SF, ACCA Melbourne and CCA Glasgow. His work has seen him receive the Cove Park/Henry Moore Fellowship, Akademie Schloss Solitude Fellowship, the Sher-Gil Sundaram Arts Foundation Installation Art Grant, the Digital Earth Fellowship, and the first Human-Machine Fellowship organized by Junge Akademie ADK. His exhibition, Ancestors, is currently on view at the JNAF gallery in the CSMVS Museum in Mumbai. BALTIC has recently celebrated its 20th birthday with a programme of special events to commemorate its two decades at the centre of contemporary art and this latest exhibition continues their showcasing of innovative works from national and international artists. You can catch Mythmachine at BALTIC from 24th September 2022 to 3rd September 2023. EMMA CHESWORTH

STAGE
This September, Northern Stage welcomes their newest production to the venue in the form of ‘All The Beds I Have Slept In’. The stage show looks into the lives of the performers as we follow their stories of forced migration being brought to life with energy and emotion, delving into the kindness and care demonstrated by real people who extended a hand of help to the actors as they sought asylum whilst trying to find a new home and move forward in their lives. Whilst, in part, being a shout-out to all the people who created connections and influenced the actors’ performance, it is also a heart-warming piece that delves into the hidden moments of journeys that have been fraught with obstacles and difficulties along the way. You can see this amazing performance on September 8th and 9th at Northern Stage where, for a little while, the venue becomes yet another bed for the performers as they find themselves anchored to the safe space of the stage.
