Following time away from music due to a bereavement, Beth Macari is back. As she returns with her new single, ‘Circles’, Lee Allcock caught up with Beth to speak about her grandma, making music once again and more.
Following the release of ‘Gotta Get Back’ and ‘Love You More’, which reached #5 and #6 respectively in the UK Soul Chart, we’re expecting big things from your new release, ‘Circles’...
Honestly, it was such an amazing feeling when I got into the charts. It’s a bit surreal but
just so humbling to think of
music due to a bereavement in your family. That must have been a tough time...
There is no pain like losing someone you love. I was trying to write about it but I felt that no words even touched on how I was feeling and how amazing my grandma was. So, I decided to take the pressure away for a while, and eight months later, I got back into music and felt much more ready for it.
Why did you decide that now was the right time to return?
I think I realised I’m always going to be sad about losing my grandma, and my heart has a break in it now for life. I’d taken the time to try and heal and I finally felt a little spark when I started to write and sing again - and that’s when I knew I was ready to step back into
my music.
And finally, where can we catch you live over the next
fewmonths?
I’m playing at some great festivals this summer. I’ve just supported Will Young at Bents Park and I was on the main stage at Festival by the Sea on the 16th July too. I’m also playing the lush Lindisfarne Festival on September 3rd, which I’m really excited about...Rudimental are headlining that day which will be class. And, of course, I’m buzzing to be returning to NE Volume Bar
in Stockton in September.

how many radio stations are supporting my music and helping it climb up the charts. I’m just so grateful.
What can we expect from the new track both sonically and in terms of subject matter?
‘Circles’ is a song about the
struggles of being a woman. I don’t
think people realise the expectations
that society puts on our shoulders. When I started writing, the song stemmed from the amount of time I was getting asked ‘are you not ready to settle down now? You’re getting on’ and talking about my body clock. I’m only 29, but regardless of a woman’s age, I don’t think you should be told you need to do something by a certain age or stop perusing your dreams because you’re ‘getting on’.
