Speech and Language Support for 3-5s%u00a9 Elklan Training Limited 2023 100S5(Slide 127)%u2022 Show the slide, refer to ELB. page 56 and go through the points.%u2022 Emphasise the point about encouraging the continued development of their home language (but also the difficulties this causes at times, particularly with Asian languages where many parents want children to just learn English - %u2018negative bilingualism%u2019).5.1.3 Is it just a matter of using %u2018short simple sentences%u2019?(Slide 128)%u2022 Unfortunately, modifying one%u2019s speech is not just a matter of talking in shorter sentences as the following examples illustrate.%u2022 Describe a scenario: At the same time everyday a teacher might say %u2018Children stop what you%u2019re doing and come and sit on the red carpet please.%u2019%u2022 This sentence contains 15 words and yet the child would probably understand this routine from the situation alone (refer to NVC session 3). %u2022 In many instances (especially during routines at home and in the setting), children do not have to understand much language. %u2022 However, %u2018Give Rachel%u2019s book to Sam%u2019 contains 5 words but, depending on the situation, the child may have to understand 3 or 4 of these words in order to do as he is asked.%u2022 The sentence is shorter but potentially harder to comprehend because the child will have to understand more of the words rather than just the situation.
