The more things we explore, the more likely we are to learn new words. This is how to narrow the %u2018word gap%u2019 between young children with limited vocabulary knowledge and their peers. 8.2.5 Large Doll Play(ELB. 90, Slide 231)%u2022 Show the slide to introduce Large Doll play.%u2022 At 9 -12 months - a child will show an understanding of everyday objects by using them appropriately e.g. brush. When the child uses it appropriately he is demonstrating an understanding of that object.%u2022 At this stage, a child tends to only use objects on himself.%u2022 18 months - recognises dolls/teddies as representing people. Relates the objects to these dolls/teddies as he acts out everyday events e.g. feeding Teddy, putting doll in bed. (Slide 232)%u2022 Demonstrate brushing Ted%u2019s or Doll%u2019s hair with a Large Doll sized brush.%u2022 Hold up a real sized brush and the Large Doll sized brush and explain how there is just a small leap of imagination to see how the Large Doll sized brush represents the real thing. But the child is beginning to see how one thing can represent another - he is starting his journey towards symbolic understanding.
