Narrative: Elijah the Prophet

was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. For this is he,
of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before

thee. For verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater
prophet than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than
he. And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the
violent take it by force. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. And if ye will receive it,
this is Elias, which was for to come. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.”

And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the
baptism of John. But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being
       not baptized of him.
             And the Lord said,

“Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? And to what are they like? They are
like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, unto their fellows, And saying,
“We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have
       not wept.”
“For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say,

             “He hath a devil.”
“The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say,
“Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!”
“But wisdom is justified of all her children.”

“But I have greater witness than that of John: For the works which the Father hath given me to
finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. And the Father
himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor
seen his shape. And ye have not his word abiding in you: For whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.”
“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: And they are they which

testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. I receive not honor from men. But I
know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me
