Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Ceasar, Pontius Pilate being governor of
Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituræa and of the region
of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, in those days there was a man sent from God,
whose name was John. Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the
son of Zacharias in the wilderness. And John the Baptist came into all the country about Jordan,
preaching in the wilderness of Judæa, the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; and saying,
“Repent ye: For the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might
believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. For this is he that was spoken

valley shall be filled, every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made
straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”

world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his
own received him not. But to as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of
God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh,
