4D.2 : Technology Solutions
India has a system of crop yield estimation which is based on traditional crop cuts, surveys and
reports from the District Agricultural Offices. Additionally, many agencies undertake field verifications
and consultations to collect additional information on crop performance. Many agencies like MNCFC,
IMD, SAC, ICAR, IARI, NCAER, etc., provide aggregated crop outlooks to the government. FASAL
program of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare is worth mentioning in this context. It
uses remote sensing inputs, crop models and government statistics to develop crop outlooks

GPS devices and mobile app led ground surveys Mobile App based Field Surveys / Ground Truthing
and Crop Cutting Experiments
For satellite data led crop A, P, Y assessments regular field surveys, ground truthing and Crop
Cutting Experiments (CCEs) are conducted using mobile based applications, data collected is stored in
enterprise databases (per business applications) and is further used for geo-referencing the AOI and
carrying out A, P, Y specific assessments for the crops under study.
