FIVE STEPS FOR DEVELOPING MEDIA&INFORMATION LITERACY
STEP 1 ‘ACCESS’
‘Access’ addresses learning how to find and
comprehend media messages, and how to use
media technology.
In this step, young people learn about finding
and sharing appropriate and relevant information.
When children learn to read, they notice the meaning
of the words formed by letters and learn to understand
the relationship between words and pictures.
Decoding and understanding the meaning of printed words is an important access
skill.
It can be transferred to all types of media. However, access is always media-
specific and it takes different skills to use different media.
To find information online, for instance, you have to be skilled in using
technology. You have to know what keywords are appropriate to type into search
engines and know how to navigate through the suggested online sources.
Participation in social networks requires the ability to interact socially despite
being alone physically, to decide what content should be shared and, often,
multitasking skills.
