Butch Parsons of Nocona, Texas, has fun racing one or two horses a year,
something the 72-year-old has done since the late 1960s. It doesn’t get more enjoyable than the evening he spent recently at Fair Meadows in Tulsa, Oklahoma, when his Fast N Fancy captured the Speedhorse Futurity-G3 in dramatic fashion.
“When you win some-
thing like this, it’s hard to believe,” said Parsons.
Victory Farms had the entry of fastest- qualifier VF Floosie and third-fastest qualifier A Bee C. Bettors liked getting both horses for their money, sending the entry off as the 17-10 favorite. Fast N Fancy, second to VF Floosie in her trial and the second-fastest qualifier, was the 7-1 fourth choice.
When the gate opened, Fast N Fancy got away well in fourth from post six, as several to her inside rushed to the lead.
Jockey Larry Payne asked Fast N Fancy for
more speed and she diligently gave it to him. She came on strongly at the end of the 350 yards to win in the final jump by a nose and stopped the clock in :17.763.
Parsons gave credit to Payne, trainer Sam Howard, and Howard’s assistant, Juan Martinez, for Fast N Fancy’s success.
“They’re really the people who made it happen,” he said. “They are excellent with horses. Larry Payne is
one of the top jockeys in the business.” Parsons bought Fast N Fancy privately in
June of last year from William Smith, who bred the filly in partnership with Weetona Stanley in Oklahoma.
“She was a big, good-looking, racy-looking filly,” said Parsons, who also liked her pedigree.
There is plenty of pedigree behind the youngster. A daughter of the good stal- lion PYC Paint Your Wagon, Fast N Fancy is out of the winning Mr Jess Perry mare First Prize Fancy. From 12 starters, First
