that he got the trophy and the buckle.”
The Bakers buy and sell all types of horses,
and they often have a few racehorses, both Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds. Garrett loves to ride and would like to be a jockey. For now he competes in speed events such as barrel racing, where he has earned high-point buckles. He has also started team roping as a header.
“Last year for his birthday he got a jockey saddle and jockey pants,” said Adina. “Donnie gave him a set of blinkers and a race bridle.”
Garrett’s 14.2-hand, rather overweight riding horse willingly wears the entire outfit, including a saddle towel from last year’s Remington Futurity. Garrett has English riding boots as well as goggles he has received from various jockeys, and he proudly rides the horse all over the Bakers’ property.
Meanwhile, Just Eagle can continue to race and perhaps earn Garrett more trophies and buckles. Adina said that they often go to Florida over Christmas, so they may be able to watch her compete in the Hialeah Maturity and perhaps some of the Challenge races.
Garrett already has plans for a second genera- tion. Adina said that they might pull an embryo from Just Eagle next year and breed her to PYC Paint Your Wagon. Not surprisingly, Garrett already is mulling over names for the foal.
As a stakes winner with a good pedigree,
Just Eagle could very well step up as Garrett’s foundation broodmare. Hazel Mulanax bred Just Eagle in Texas from Debs Cartel, who ran 2nd in the 2002 Aliso Viejo Handicap at Los Alamitos. Debs Cartel has produced 6 winners from 10 starters, including stakes winners Endless Ocean and Debs RQD. Debs Cartel is a 1/2-sister to Texas Classic Futurity-G1 winner Fast Debonair, Oklahoma Futurity-G1 winner Lady Mara, and 3 other stakes winners. One of those, Savona, is the dam of multiple Paint Champions.
Adrian Jeffery Bigby’s homebred Big Kids Birthday (Furrtreeous-Bobbie Blue Chewchew) finished second. Larry Payne rode the gelding for trainer Dee Keener. A winner in four of eight previous starts, Big Kids Birthday was the second-fastest qualifier.
G.R. Carter Jr. piloted Unfurrgetable (Furrtreeous-Sweeties Streak) to third for trainer Jerry Ingels and owner Joel Rod Pierce. Second to Big Kids Birthday in their trial, the filly was the third-fastest qualifier.
Followed by Boozin And Cruzin (Tempting Dash-Penelope Cruzin), TF Painted Strawfly (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Miss Marality), A Black Zipper (Count Corona-Stayin On Task), Willies Lil Indian (Cartel Willie-Smashed Indian), Nutbush (PYC Paint Your Wagon- Brimful), Tempting Secret Dash (Tempting Dash-Secret Baby Doll) & Zoom Thru Fire (Jess Zoomin-La Dominica).
