Retama Park Derby
THE SWAGGER WAGON
by Danny Camp
The Swagger Wagon can strut and swagger now because he won his first stakes race on July 25 in the $136,400 Retama Park Derby. The 3-year-old gelding has had a rough road to travel. He ran seven times as a freshman and never had his picture taken. He moved to Retama Park, overcame some injuries, and hit his stride under the conditioning of Cindi Keeton.
The Swagger Wagon won his July 11 trial to the Retama Park Derby for the 2nd qualifying position. He came back in the finals and put on a show. It was late at night when the starter opened the gates. After a rocky start, breaking 5th from the 7-hole, rider Oscar Hernandez straightened The Swagger Wagon a bit and the gelding dug down deep to win the 400- yard race by a head in :20.204 with a driving finish.
With the $54,560 first place money, the gelding has now earned a total of $63,803. He has won two races in a row, and it appears a bright future is ahead.
The Swagger Wagon is owned & was bred by Kevin Hogan in Oklahoma, out of winner Royalty Fee. The mare has produced 100% winners/ROM from her two starters, but The Swagger Wagon is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Fasttimeswith Redoak (Red Oak Special-Rg Miladys Fast Lady) broke a bit to the inside. When he straightened out, rider Ignacio Bustamante went to work and took 2nd for owner Trinidad Flores and trainer Yasmine Fierro. Jockey Francisco Calderon and Political Debut (Apolitical Jess-Sizzling Lola) took 3rd for Gara Laurel Partnership LLC and trainer Angel Sanchez. Followed by Rc Me Leaving You (Coronas Leaving You-Sixy Bottom), Kawow (Pyc Paint Your Wagon-Wowzer Won), Rare Legs (Rare King-Lovely Legs), Cuz Ima Success (Cartel Success-Showum Some Kisses), Jmf Shazoomer (Shazoom-Jess Bingo Beth), Face This Runner (Make It Anywhere-Fredaburg) & Bye Bye Birdy (Hawkinson-Sweet Bye And Bye).
TQHA Classic
ZOOMIN EFFORTLESSLY
by Danny Camp
Zoomin Effortlessly seems to be getting better with age. The four-year-old gelding has a race record of nine wins out of fifteen races. He has won five of his last seven, and his last three in a row. He has also stepped up in competition and he is winning stakes races. His first stakes victory came in the TQHA Sires’ Cup Stakes at Retama Park on June 15 were
he set a 400-yard New Track Record. And now, one race later, he won the 400-yard $38,750 TQHA Classic also at Retama Park.
Zoomin Effortlessly stepped away from the 1-post and steadily and evenly put distance between himself and the field. At the end, he tripped the timer at :20.122 in front by 1/2-length to earn a 90 speed index.
The $23,250 first place money takes his total earnings to $71,201. Zoomin Effortlessly is owned by Telesforo Perrett and trained by Edelmiro Carrizales. Santos Carrizales was handling the reins.
Zoomin Effortlessly was bred by Tommy R. Charbula in Texas, out of unplaced Royal Quick Affair. The mare has produced 100% money earners from her two starters. Zoomin Effortlessly is her fist stakes winner.
A gritty effort by Mr Jo Eagle (One Famous Eagle-First Place Diamond) resulted in a second place finish for owner Dan W. Nicks & trainer
R.L. Robinson. Luis Ramirez was in the saddle and provided plenty of encouragement. Third place was earned by Pyro (Make It Anywhere-Rare Kayoh), who ran a steady and even race for owner Kathleen O. Matey and trainer Leslie Padilla. Luis Guerrero was aboard. Eyesa Famous Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Eyesa Glass), Shake Em Bok (Boknaai-Shake To Shine), Pursuit Of Duty (One Famous Eagle- Southern Fast Lady) & Sunny D (Okey Dokey Dale- Sweethearts Lady) completed the remaining order of finish. Aunti Up was scratched.
TQHA 250 Stakes
JESS A COMMENT
by Danny Camp
At 250 yards, you have to be quick, and I mean quick enough to play tennis by yourself. Apparently, Jess A Comment is that quick. The 6-year-old sorrel gelding stepped away from the 1-post on the lead in the $35,000 TQHA 250 Stakes at Retama Park on July 24 and never looked back.
Jess A Comment knew he was a winner. He had won his last two in a row, so why should this be any different. After all, he’s so fast he could probably play tennis by himself. There was no doubt when Jess A Comment left the gates. Even Luis Ramirez, who was in the saddle, had enough knowledge to just get out ofhiswayandlethimdowhathelovestodo.Itwasa spectacular performance as Jess A Comment went wire- to-wire and stopped the clock at :13.287 for a 101 speed index. Finishing 1 3/4-lengths on top, they had their picture taken and cashed a check worth $21,000. That means Jess A Comment has now earned $194,890.
Jess A Comment is owned by Michael S. Amburn and trained by Mike Robbins. The gelding was bred by Raymond R. Loup in Texas, out of stakes winner & 400-yard New Track Record setter Jess Quick Fun. Jess A Comment is the first blacktype runner out of the mare, who has produced 10 winners & 12 ROM from 14 starters.
Last Man Standin (Jodys Money Pop-La Jollas Game) was 2nd under Luis Guerrero for Shawn L. McCain & trainer Leslie Padilla. John The Banker (Ivory James-First Place Diamond) was 3rd under Santos Carrizales for Dan W. Nicks & trainer R. L. Robinson. Followed by Cartel Arrangement (Carters Cartel-Hawks Dancing Straw), Db Captain King (Captain Courage-Lizarun), Red Corona Warrior (Coronas Fast Dash-Prairie War Princess), Dont Text That (Jet Cartel-Go You Must), Eye Agree (Mr Eye Opener-Tiny First Effort), Raising Kain (Down N Dash-Smooth Money Raiser) & Mighty Quick Shake (Royal Shake Em-Takin Up The Ante).
