A MIGHTY FORTUNE
by Danny Camp
Trainer Edward Ross Hardy has now won the Minnesota Stallion Breeders’ Futurity four times. This year, he used A Mighty Fortune to get the money. That money was $16,875, which was the biggest cut of the $37,500 purse.
A Mighty Fortune finished 5th in her June 21 trial for the 9th qualifying position under jockey David Pinon, who was also aboard for the finals. The 2-year- old filly stepped away from the 7-post in good shape, getting the 2nd call from the gates. Pinon had never won this particular race before, so with a tight hold and a few taps on the shoulder, they quickly took the lead and stayed on top the remainder of the race. They crossed the wire 1/2-length to the good in :18.287. This race not only breaks A Mighty Fortune’s maiden, but give her a blacktype victory in the process.
A Mighty Fortune has upped her bankroll to $18,411 for owner Bob Hardy. The filly was bred by Fournerat Cattle Company LLC in Louisiana. She is the first starter out of unraced Dash Ta Fortune, who is an AQHA World Championship Show money earner & a finalist in AQHA Open World Show Jr. Pole Bending.
There was some bumping and banging on the inside, but on the outside it was clear sailing for Fast Eye Opener (Hasta Be Fast-One Eye Opener). Ronald Richard was in the saddle and they got up for the sec- ond place money for owner John G. Johnson & trainer Robert Johnson. Fastest qualifer Nobull Just Corona (Cartel Success-Silver Tongued Chick) gave a strong effort down the track under Ismael Suarez Ricardo
to take 3rd for Joe K. Noble and trainer Vic Hanson. Followed by Such An Easy Chick (Such Easy Cash- Crazy Kwik Chick), Heiress To Royalty (Cs Flashlight- Easily An Heiress), Exceptionally Fast (Hasta Be Fast-With Exceptions), Jess Hasta Be (Hasta Be Fast- Jesses Identity), Eyra Hayes (Knud With Wings-Silver Fastbac), Fowl Play (Royal Shake Em-Behavin Cartel) & Mitey Thunder (Its Royal Time-Annie Is Easy).

by Michael Cusortelli
Defiant Red Rooster, a sophomore gelding racing for Randy L. Hill, Bobby Joe Hammer and Vickie Hammer, scored his second stakes win in the
$22,400 Dash In A Flash Stakes at Canterbury Park on July 18.
Prepped by Stacy Charette-Hill, Defiant Red Rooster covered 110 yards on a muddy and sealed track in :6.968 under jockey Jorge Torres. In addi- tion to earning the $11,200 winner’s share of the purse, the gelding recorded a 102 speed index and his second career stakes victory. The clocking was also a New Track Record at Canterbury for the distance.
An earner of $89,267, Defiant Red Rooster has won three of eight outs. Last year, the gelding won the $122,375 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity.
Defiant Red Rooster was bred by Bill Price of Thackerville, Oklahoma, a longtime breeder whose homebreds include 2002 Champion 3-Year-Old A Real Man. Defiant Red Rooster’s dam, the winning mare Dashing Mariah, was a finalist in the 1993 Heritage Place Derby-G1. Stakes winner Irish Brew (Jess Zoomin-Irish Bailey Brew) ran 3rd under Marcus Swiontek for owners Paul Knapper & James Olson. The 4-year-old filly was prepped by Jerry Livingston. Followed by Red Velvet Hero (Valiant Hero-Red Sticks), Tucan Sam (Sweet First Down-C Me Makeit Anywhere), Digthiswagon (Pyc Paint Your Wagon-Digging On High), Coronas Concierge (Corona Cartel-Dianetogetcha) & Misty River Dancer (Its Royal Time-Dashboard Light).
Rocky Mountain Derby
SPENDER
by Tracy Gantz
Spender brought classy credentials to the July 11 Rocky Mountain Derby at Arapahoe Park. Bred by perennial national leading breeder Dr. Ed Allred, owner of Los Alamitos, Spender hails from one of Allred’s many good broodmare families. The gelding had raced solely at the California track prior to the Derby trials.
Winning his June 25 trial as the second-fastest qualifier, Spender went off as the 9-5 favorite for
the final. Breaking in second under jockey Russell Vicchrilli, Spender soon took the lead from fastest-qual- ifier Sweet Solid Rock. Though that rival tried valiantly to catch Spender, the California invader went on to score by an easy 1/2-length in :17.832 for the 350 yards.
Miguel Pena trains Spender at Arapahoe for owner Aislinn Vences. When owned and trained by Valentin Zamudio at Los Alamitos, Spender had most recently finished second in the Separatist Handicap.
Allred bred Spender in California from winner Aquisitive, dam of 4 winners from 5 starters, includ- ing 2012 California Breeders Freshman Fillies Stakes winner Buy Buy, a full sister, and Buying Snow, win- ner of the 2011 Jens L. List Jr. Memorial California Breeders’ Stakes & First Down Dash Handicap.
Sweet Solid Rock (Rock Solid Jess-TF Lil Sweet N Easy) was a dominating second for jockey Alfredo Triana Jr., trainer Tim Weeder and owner Robert Reed. The gelding broke his maiden this past May at Arapahoe. Jose Lopez piloted PYC Showdown (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Royal Vogue) to third for trainer Michael Vigil & owner Paul Amos Martinez. The filly had won 2 previous races. Followed by Separate Rooms (Separatist-Dash Till Dawn), Crazy On
You (Separatist-Fantastic Six), BP Mariahs Heroine (Valiant Hero-BP Southern Mariah), Burst Of Dash (Dashin Bye-Iza Flyin Eye), Whos Kissin Carter (Carters Cartel-Whos Kissin Who) & El Babu (Simply Silver Sage-Bachue). Feelthismomentbaby was scratched.
