EAGLES SPAN
EBy Danny Camp
agles Span won the 1st of 5 trials to the 350-yard
$141,100 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity on June 14 by a head in a driving finish under Cody Smith. His :18.291 held for the 7th fastest time to the July 5 finals. His rider, however, qualified 4 others and opted to ride fastest qualifier Gone All In. So, Berkley Packer picked up the mount and guided Eagles Span into the inside post for the main event. There was a delay behind the gates, it was trouble with the timers. Then, another horse was fractious. Eagles Span loaded first & stood the longest, but received the 4th call from the gates. He was quickly in the lead, and another signature driving finish pushed him across the line with a head advan- tage in :18.155 for a career-high 87 speed index.
Eagles Span earned $70,550, taking his earnings to $89,168. The colt now has 3 wins from 4 tries for own- ers Tom & Bill Maher. Trainer Jason Olmstead said the colt likes his job. “I had 5 qualifiers to this race and I didn’t give Eagles Span much chance,” he admitted. “He drew the inside, which was historically the kiss of death at Canterbury. He stepped up like a champ. He is always so cool and calm around the barn, and he’s nice to gallop and handle. That disposition helped him when there was a huge delay before they loaded.”
Eagles Span becomes the 3rd stakes winner out of Champion Tiny First Effort.
Gone All In (Tres Seis-Gone First) was 2nd under Cody Smith for Gene & Faye Reeves and trainer Jason Olmstead. Streakin Wagon (Pyc Paint Your Wagon- Streakin La Tac) was 3rd under David Pinon for Reliance Ranches LLC and trainer Edward Ross Hardy. Followed by Dividendz ( Ivory James-Jess A Lil Bit More), Expensive Paint Job (Pyc Paint Your Wagon- Deedashing), Big Bad Ivory (Ivory James-A Little Storm), Okeyfreight (Freightrain B-Okey Dokey Eyes), No Regrets Here (Favorite Cartel-Duplicate Check), Painted Streaks (Pyc Paint Your Wagon-Streakin Rare) & Valiant Norther (Valiant Hero-Fast Red Rose).

t was a dreary day at Canterbury Park on July 4,
but the track was fast and there was a $29,075 to be divided in the 400-yard Great Lakes Bonus Challenge - and that will brighten anybody’s day.
The race had seven starters break from the gate and try to get to the wire first. This Wagons Okay scram- bled away from the 7-post. He slipped in front and his hind end seemed to have a mind of its own, but he was still given the first call. After few jumps, the 4-year-old gelding gained purchase on the track and lengthened his stride. Rider Jorge Torres tapped his mount a couple of times on the shoulder, then enjoyed the ride. The pair received every call en-route to a 1 1/4-length victory.
They stopped the timer at :20.130, earning a 93 speed index. They also earned the $14,537 first place money, which takes This Wagons Okay total bank to $109,352. His record of six wins from 13 outs is even more impressive now that he’s won his last 5 of 6 starts. He’s on a roll for his team, which includes owner Michael A. Pohl and trainer Stacy Charette-Hill.
This Wagons Okay was bred in Oklahoma by Pohl out of 2-time stakes winner and New Track Record setter This Candys Okay. The mare has pro- duced 100% money earners from her four starters. This Wagons Okay is her best first stakes winner and leading money earner.
Jockey Stormy Smith knew it was going to be a tough race, but his mount Wicked Valentine (One Famous Eagle-Only The Wicked) put forth a valiant effort that earned second place money for owners
Brad & Ann Tate and trainer Charlton Hunt. Xoom (Shazoom-Dashing Dion) ran a steady race to take third for Paul Treadwell and trainer Edward Ross Hardy. David Pinon was handling the reins. Followed by Bf Farm Boy (Hawkinson-Shirleys Strawfly), R Diva (Furyofthewind-Special Smoothie), Painted Summer (Pyc Paint Your Wagon-Summertime Runaway) & Thirty Six Belles (Tres Seis-Ja Desert Evening).
