of Wise Counsellor. Wise Counsellor was the sire of Very Wise. Very Wise was the broodmare sire of 3-time AQHA World Champion Quarter Horse Go Man Go.
Another son of Vandal was Voltigeur,
who was out of Duet by Highlander. This makes Voltigeur 2 X 3 inbred to *Glencoe. With Duet being double bred to *Priam, this makes Voltigeur an inbred *Glencoe with two crosses to *Priam through his dam. Plus, a shot of Gamma from the great mare Delta.
Voltigeur was the sire of Nora M, the dam of Peter McCue. Peter McCue became the famous American Quarter Horse foundation sire that stood in Illinois, Texas, Oklahoma and Colorado. He figures prominently in many families of Quarter Horses. He sired such noted stallions as Harmon Baker, Hickory Bill, Badger, A. D. Reed, Jack McCue, Chief P-5 and Sheik P-11.
Nora M was bred by James Owen of Berlin, Illinois. She was a bay mare foaled in 1880. Her race record in Victoria Short’s book Unregistered Foundation Sires of the American Quarter Horse shows that she had 61 starts with nine wins, five seconds and ten thirds.
The dam of Nora M was the mare
Kitty Clyde, who was sired by Star Davis
by *Glencoe. The dam of Star Davis was Margaret Wood by *Priam. This makes Nora M. 3 X 4 X 3 linebred to *Glencoe and 6 X 4 X 4 linebred to *Priam.
Up to this point we have been seeing a great deal of influence by the stallion *Glencoe. This use of *Glencoe in the stallions standing at Belle Meade Stud warrants our taking a look at this great stallion. *Glencoe was sired by Sultan, who was sired by Selim by Buzzard. The dam of Sultan was Bacchante by Williamson’s Ditto, by Sir Peter Teazle. The dam of *Glencoe was Trampoline by Tramp. The dam of Trampoline was Web, who was by Waxy and out of Penelope. *Glencoe was a good race horse winning the Riddlesworth Stakes, Goodwood Gold Cup and the Racing Sweepstakes.
*Glencoe was imported to the U.S. by a gentleman named James Jackson. Jackson bought *Glencoe in 1836 from a Mr. Tattering. Mr. Tattering was allowed to use *Glencoe during the 1836 breeding season and the horse came to America after the breeding season.
The 1836 breeding season was the first season for *Glencoe to stand after his race career. He sired the great Pocahontas in that crop of foals. Pocahontas is a hot topic today as the source of the large heart gene that horses like Secretariat carry. Some report that she inherited her large heart gene from the great Thoroughbred foundation sire Eclipse. It is believed that Pocahontas was a
3-time AQHA World Champion Go Man Go (shown here with John and Orren Mixer) traces back to the great Vandal, who stood at Belle Meade Stud in the 1860’s.
double copy mare for the large heart gene. Marianna Haun, who originally reported that Pocahontas got her large heart gene from Eclipse, now believes that one of her large heart genes came from the dam of The Darley Arabian.
Pocahontas was the dam of the famous Thoroughbred stallions Stockwell, King Tom and Rataplan. Stockwell and Rataplan were full brothers sired by The Baron. The Baron was sired by Irish Birdcatcher, who was sired by Sir Hercules by Whalebone. Whalebone was sired by Waxy and out of Penelope. The Baron was out of Echidna by Economist. Economist was sired by Whisker, who was by Waxy and out of Penelope. King Tom
was sired by Harkaway by Economist, and Economist was sired by Whisker. Whalebone and Whisker were full brothers to Web, the second dam of *Glencoe. Thus, these three sons of Pocahontas were linebred to the full brothers and sister Whisker, Whalebone
and Web, giving us a collateral line breeding pattern in these early Thoroughbreds.
*Glencoe sired many more great mares, including Reel. Reel was the dam of War
Dance and LeComte. War Dance was sired
by Lexington and LeComte was sired by Boston. Boston was the sire of Lexington. Thus, War Dance and LeComte were 3/4-brothers. War Dance was the sire of Lizzie G. LeComte was the broodmare sire of Lizzie G. Thus, Lizzie G was inbred to the 3/4-brothers War Dance and LeComte. Lizzie G was the dam of Mannie Gray, the dam of Domino. She was also the dam of Faustus, the sire of Bonnie Joe. Of course, the modern Quarter Horse has the blood of Domino flowing through its veins through horses like Three Bars (TB), Leo, Depth Charge (TB), and Top Deck (TB). And, Bonnie Joe was the sire of the great Joe Blair (TB), the sire of Joe Reed P-3.
The blood of *Glencoe was very prominent in the Belle Meade stallions. *Glencoe is found in the pedigrees of the following Belle Meade stallions - Highlander, Bill Cheatham, Brown Dick, Vandal, John Morgan, *Great Tom, Luke Blackburn, Tremont, and The Commoner. Some of these stallions had multiple crosses to this great stallion. *Great Tom was sired by King Tom, one of the sons of Pocahontas.
