2018 FRESHMAN SIRE OF THE YEAR Five Bar Cartel wins 2018 Freshman Sire Title
by Stacy Pigott
Long before Five Bar Cartel’s racing career was complete, the Champion colt’s future home as a breeding stallion was secured at
Robicheaux Ranch.
His journey to the Bayou State required
a combination of opportunity, timing, persistence and a little luck. All of which resulted in the stallion being named 2018 American Quarter Horse Association Freshman Sire of the Year.
A PROVEN PERFORMER
Five Bar Cartel first burst on the scene at Los Alamitos Race Course in 2013 as a precocious two-year-old colt.
He confidently won his first start by 1 3/4-lengths, setting the stage for a stellar career to come.
Trained by Danny Montes, Five Bar Cartel won his next three starts in a row, including
a trial and the finals of the $1,071,000 Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1, and a trial to the $1,002,700 Golden State Million Futurity-G1.
Five Bar Cartel’s Los Alamitos Bonanza dreams were dashed when he finished fifth in the finals of the Golden State Million Futurity after a troubled start.
“He got bumped pretty good at the start.
He couldn’t get a good hold of the track from there and couldn’t get going,” said jockey Saul Ramirez Jr., who rode the colt in nearly all of his starts and played an integral role in facilitating his eventual move to Robicheaux Ranch.
Undeterred, Montes and owner Jorge Carmona, of San Gregorio Racing Stables Inc., in Mira Loma, California, pointed Five Bar Cartel to the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1.
