     Five Bar Cartel
Futurity-G2 at Sunland Park, the Five Bar Cartel daughter All Sophia Wanted ran second by a neck to favorite Suze Returns.
A week later, Ladys A Cartel, bred by A
Regal Choice, Inc. out of the Relegate TB mare Significant Lady, stepped up to qualify for the Pot O’ Gold Futurity at Sun Downs in Kennewick, Washington. On May 6, she became the first stakes winner for her sire after scoring a commanding
1 1/4-length win in the $32,993 finals.
The fact that Ladys A Cartel was Five
Bar Cartel’s first stakes winner was fitting,
as trainer Montes saddled the filly for owner Carmona, rewarding the faith they had in the young stallion.
While Ladys A Cartel was making headlines on the West Coast, the Michael Taylor trainee Shakeshakeshakeit was turning heads in Louisiana. The Five Bar Cartel gelding (out of Rebas In The House, by Tres Seis) qualified to the Louisiana Breeders’ Laddie Futurity-G2 on April 28. He returned to break his maiden with a fast-closing nose win in the $359,715 finals on May 19.
“It’s all pretty exciting,” Robicheaux said. “When Shakeshakeshakeit won the Laddie,
I was thrilled for the Taylor family and the ownership group, Show Me Da Money. But I don’t think anyone was happier than me. This horse is so special!”
In the distaff version of the same race, Five Bar Cartel daughters Five Bell Cartel and Amending The Bar ran fourth and sixth, respectively.
While Five Bell Cartel didn’t race again in 2018, Amending The Bar went on to become her sire’s leading money earner for the year.
Purchased for $6,500 at the 2017 LQHBA Yearling Sale by owner Julio Ramirez from
breeders Ray and Brenda Trahan, Amending The Bar’s eligibility for the LQHBA Sale Futurity determined her racing schedule. Racing for trainer Jose Sanchez III, Amending The Bar took a few months off after the Lassie Futurity to prepare for a fall campaign at the Fair Grounds.
Contesting the trials to the LQHBA Sale Futurity on August 17, she qualified to the finals with a neck victory under jockey Eddie Sanchez. On September 8, with Jorge Linares up, Amending The Bar won the $434,538, LQHBA Sale Futurity-RG1.
Racing two more times in 2018, Amending The Bar si 99 added another win to her record in a trial to the LQHBA Million Futurity
and made another stakes appearance in the Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile-G2, where she ran fourth. She ended her two-year-old season with a record of four wins in six starts and $226,816.
Her lucrative bankroll added to her sire’s year-end total of $1,227,988, which made him the leading freshman sire of two-year-old money earners and the eighth leading sire of two-year- old money earners overall.
In addition to Ladys A Cartel si 106 ($24,672), Shakeshakeshakeit si 97 ($217,938) and Amending The Bar si 99 ($226,816), Five Bar Cartel was also represented by stakes winners KR Hi Five
si 94 ($129,250), Roster Man si 96 ($48,800), and Harem Bar Cartel si 105 ($15,345).
KR Hi Five, out of I Bee Phia, by Mr Eye Opener, won both the Wild West Futurity and AQHA Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2 for trainer Jaime Gomez and owners Sally and Dave Kidd.
