her win in the Miss Princess Handicap-G3. She was match raced in “the rough-and- tumble, no-holds-barred world of match racing in Mexico in races called ‘tapadas.’”
Adan Farias the trainer for Five Bar Molly in her 2007 starts explained it this way, “That’s like a blind date between two racehorses. One side brings a horse and the other side brings another horse, but neither side knows the identity of the opposing horse.”
Farias went on to explain why Five Bar Molly was put in the tapadas. “Because people wouldn’t want to match her if they knew her identity. Everyone there knew she was one of the best mares around. I never saw her run in Mexico, but I had heard about her.” This tells us she is much like Della Moore in that we don’t know her race record in Mexico, but she was successful and was respected by those that ran against her.
Flores explained that Five Bar Molly
was brought back to breed, but she was in such good shape that she was sent back to the track. She reappeared in 2007 at Los Alamitos Race Course in the Kas Overnight Handicap in January where she was fourth. She was fourth in an allowance in her next start in February. She didn’t start again until April when she won another allowance.
Her next start was in the Miss Princess Handicap-G3 with a win. She then ran third in the trials for the Vessels Maturity-G1 with a win in the finals making her a grade one winner. Her next start came in the Mildred N. Vessels Handicap-G1 where
she placed fourth. Her next start came in
the Los Alamitos Invitational Handicap-G1 where she came in seventh and her final race was the Champion of Champions-G1 where she “stumbled and then got bumped” to finish last.
Five Bar Molly started her race career in 2000 and was retired at the end of 2007 with an official record of 25 starts with 12 wins three in stakes races; one second and three thirds with one of them in a stakes race. She earned $187,109. We don’t know how many races she had in Mexico, but a comment by Farias indicates that as a nine year old, “She had no physical problems,” indicating her soundness as a runner.
Five Bar Molly not only raced in 2007 but again through modern science she also produced two foals. They were Rare Five
Bar by Especially Rare and Mollys Cartel by Corona Cartel, a full sister to Five Bar Cartel. Rare Five Bar would earn his ROM, but he was a nonwinner with two seconds and two thirds in 11 starts. He earned $5,804. Mollys Cartel was the winner of four of her eight starts earning $150,163. She was a finalist
