Aweek after Rogelio Marquez Jr. of Rosenberg, Texas, won the Louisiana-Bred Lassie Futurity at Delta Downs with his homebred One Sweet Sugar, he added an even bigger prize at Remington Park. On Champions’ Night, June 3, in the final race on the final card of the meeting, Marquez won the Heritage Place Futurity-G1 with another homebred, San Lencho.
The fastest qualifier of the two days of trials, San Lencho went off as the 7-5 favorite in the 350-yard final dash. He broke on top for jockey Juan Pulido and immediately battled with Deep Blue, but he was never headed.
With San Lencho drawn on the outside and Deep Blue on the rail, the two weren’t close to each other on the racetrack. But they were noses apart for the lead until the final yards. San Lencho began pulling away, hitting the wire 3/4-length in front while stopping the timer in:17.336.
“The horse made a huge run today,” Pulido said. “He was perfect from the gate.”
Waylan Melton trains San Lencho for Marquez, and on the same card the trainer won
Jockey Juan Pulido and San Lencho win the richest race in Oklahoma, the $1,207,640 Heritage Place Futurity-G1, at Remington Park on June 3.
