San Lencho’s winning connections include owner Rogelio Marquez Jr., trainer Waylan Melton and jockey Juan Pulido.
the Junos Request Stakes-G1 with Fabulous Rachel. Melton was the winningest Remington Park trainer at the meeting by percentage, sending out 22 winners in 66 starters for 33%.
Three of those wins came with San Lencho, who began his racing career at Remington and is now perfect in 3 starts. Melton unveiled the colt in a March 24 maiden race. With Pulido
aboard, San Lencho led throughout for a head victory at 350 yards. Pulido returned aboard San Lencho for the trials. The May 11 card had to be postponed until May 15 because of bad weather. The slight delay didn’t bother San Lencho, who powered to the front and won by an easy 1 3/4-lengths as the 13-10 favorite.
San Lencho had drawn post 9 in his trial, and he drew the outside post for the final. He was one of three horses Melton qualified for the race, the others being PYC Legacy from post 2 and Flyn Electric Cowboy from post 8.
“All week long I was excited when I saw we drew outside (with San Lencho),” said Melton. “I really felt good. He has been getting better and better every race. Someone asked me who I thought would win of my three, and I told them I thought any of the three had a chance.”
Marquez bred San Lencho in Texas from Dashnunder Afullmoon. Marquez purchased
the mare as a yearling for $44,500 at the 2016 LQHBA Yearling Sale from the consignment
of Robicheaux Ranch, agent for D & S Racing, which bred Dashnunder Afullmoon. Racing for Marquez, the mare won the 2017 Lee Berwick Futurity-RG1, Louisiana Bred Lassie Futurity-RG2 and Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile and the 2018 LQHBA Breeders Derby. The mare has produced three winners in seven starters, including
