bettors. They sent her off at 31-1 in the Oaks final, the third-longest shot of the field.
Daniel Torres has ridden Mrs KVN in every one of her starts, and he was back aboard for the 400-yard Heritage Place Oaks.
“She broke perfect, and I just stayed out of her way,” Torres said.
Mrs KVN had three to catch early. She motored to the front and held off all challengers to score by a head in :19.487.
Shawna praised Torres’ ride and gave him much of the credit for the win.
“I could not have asked for a better ride from him,” the trainer said. “He was patient and asked her when she needed to be asked. He was in sync with her from the start.
“We try to fly him everywhere we can because he’s the only person who’s ever been on most of our horses. He knows them, and he cares about those horses the same way we do. It really shows when he rides them.”
The team of Torres, the Manriquezes,
and Scheckel did well at Remington Park this season. They also collaborated with Kool N Foxy to win the April 22 Remington Park Oaks.
Shawna was unable to witness the Heritage Place Oaks in person, leaving Mrs KVN in the capable hands of her husband as she traveled to Ruidoso Downs to prepare horses for trials. She said that Mrs KVN won’t join her at Ruidoso this year, instead heading to Prairie Meadows for stakes there.
Scheckel is from Bellevue, Iowa, and the owner enjoys seeing his runners compete
closer to home. One of the first horses the group succeeded with at Prairie Meadows was multiple stakes winner Aqua Flash.
Mrs KVN began her racing career at two at Remington, breaking her maiden in her initial start. She then competed at Ruidoso Downs and Will Rogers Downs, and while she didn’t win, she placed in several trials and allowance races. The Heritage Place Oaks was her second lifetime victory.
McColee Land & Livestock LLC bred Mrs KVN in Utah and consigned the filly to the Ruidoso sale through Lazy E Ranch. Mrs KVN is by KVN Corona and out of Little Surfer, winner of the 2009 Hialeah Derby (in which she broke the track record) and 2010 Lone Star Distaff Challenge Stakes. The mare has produced 19 winners in 31 starters, including Champion Uncle D, stakes winner Rip Tide, and stakes-placers Call Me Cole and Griffindore.
R Ladys Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Lady Eagle 123), ridden by Jimmy Brooks, trained by Eddie D. Willis, and owned by Larry and Bobbie Rice, finished second. The filly also finished second in the 2022 Los Alamitos Two Million Juvenile.
Francisco Calderon piloted Proximity (Moonin The Eagle-Conspicuous Dynasty) to third for trainer Monty Arrossa and owner Dennis Dreier. Proximity won this year’s Oklahoma Derby-G1.
Completing the field were Painted Seis (Tres Seis-Jakes Painted Wagon), Fearless
Moon (First Moonflash-Heartbeat), Dena Marie (Apollitical Jess-Especially Tres), Curls Joyful Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Eye A Spit Curl), Where Theres Smoke (Apollitical Jess-Sumokin), A Southern Hero (Valiant Hero-Southern Miss), and Sunday Sylence (Ivory James-Featuring Jessie).
