Breeder/Owner: Edward Allred Trainer: Scott Willoughby Jockey: Vinnie Bednar
2019 Record: 10-5(3)-1(1)-1(1), $420,036, Champ. Of Champ.-G1, Spencer Childers Calif. Brdrs’. Champ.-RG1, Moonist H., 2nd Z Wayne Griffin Invit. Div. 1, 3rd Go Man Go H.-G1, 4th Brad McKinzie Winter Champ.-G1, Vessels Mat.-G1, Robert L. Boniface Los Al. Invit. Champ.-G1.
He Looks Hot’s 2019 World Championship title is above all a tribute to Dr. Ed Allred’s breeding program. Over the years, Allred has put together pedigrees that have led to Champions for himself as well as a host of others.
While Allred races many of his homebreds himself, he offers others for sale. For example, at the 2019 Los Alamitos Equine Sale, Allred consigned well over 50 yearlings, including three out of Look Her Over, the dam of He Looks Hot, and one out of Oh La Proud, He Looks Hot’s second dam.
“I collect female families, and his mother is the progenitor of a lot of good horses,” Allred said after He Looks Hot won the 2019 Champion of Champions-G1.
But Allred is also quick to credit people who have helped him in the game. At the Champion of Champions, he mentioned three people
he wished could have been there to share in
the moment: R.D. Hubbard, the late Spencer Childers, and the late Brad McKinzie.
Allred has shepherded He Looks Hot’s pedigree from way back, having bred and raced the first two dams. He Looks Hot’s family includes Champions Hawkish, Hawkinson, and Flame N Flash, and he is a full brother to Grade 1 winner Once Over and a half-brother to multiple stakes winner Take A Look.
Nevertheless, when He Looks Hot didn’t pay attention to his early lessons at 2 in 2014, Allred and trainer Scott Willoughby knew he needed to be gelded.
“We liked this colt, but until we gelded him he really didn’t start running,” said Allred.
He Looks Hot repaid them by closing out the year with a victory in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1. He looked like he had a huge future—until colic nearly killed him. Three times he underwent surgery, and each time he survived.
Willoughby has done a superb job caring for He Looks Hot, though he credits his entire team.
“Juan Chavez, my assistant, stayed with this horse every time he’s had colic surgery,” Willoughby said. “This horse is not even supposed to be alive.”
