Breeder: Reed Land & Cattle and Levings Racing
Owner: Ronald Hartley
Trainer: John Cooper
Jockeys: Eddie Garcia & Juan Leon
2019 Race Record: 9-3(1)-2-0, $840,640, Los Alamitos $2 Million F.-G1, 4th Robert Adair Kindergarten F.-G2, Gov. Cup F.-RG2.
Ron Hartley remembered the mare Feature Jess Rockin as good enough to compete in the 2010 Champion of Champions-G1. So when he saw an in utero baby out of the mare in the 2017 Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale, he asked Dr. Steve Burns to buy it for him.
For $18,000 Hartley obtained a future Champion. Reed Land & Cattle and Levings Racing bred the Favorite Cartel filly, named Cartel Jess Rockin, in California. She went on to capture the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1 and was named Champion 2-Year-Old Filly.
John Cooper trains Cartel Jess Rockin for Hartley. It is a good combination, the two having collaborated on multiple Champion Moonist.
Cartel Jess Rockin broke her maiden in her racing debut and followed that by winning her trial for the Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity-G2. She finished fourth in the final.
“This filly started out good in the Kindergarten,” said Cooper. “But she got a little antsy and started to fight the gate a little. So I spent a lot of time with her.”
It was time well spent, as Cartel Jess Rockin learned her lessons through the summer and much of the fall. She qualified for the Governor’s Cup Futurity-RG2 and ran fourth in the final. She came away from the gate slowly in two subsequent efforts and ran unplaced.
Cartel Jess Rockin impressed Cooper in her trial for the Two Million Futurity when she ran second to odds-on favorite Flokie by a nose.
“In the trials she showed a lot of run,” the trainer said. “They caught her the last jump, but I didn’t need him whipping on her. She needs to be quiet. It worked out fine.”
It was jockey Juan Leon’s first ride on Cartel Jess Rockin.
“The biggest thing I learned about her was that she didn’t like the riding crop,” Leon said. “She responded better to just being encouraged to run by using my hands.”
The technique worked again in the final, as Cartel Jess Rockin won by 3/4-length. Hartley’s $18,000 investment reaped a total of $840,640 last year.
