2019 Record: 6-4(2)-2(1)-0, $682,965, Rainbow F.-G1, All American Juv., 2nd Heritage Place F.-G1.
Don and Fran Cavenaugh haven’t owned racehorses for long and already they have a Champion in Uncle D. They credited many people for their success, and Don explained that his friend Brad Joyce started it all.
“If it hadn’t been for Brad, I never would have gotten in this business,” Don said. “In 2017, I told him I was wanting to buy some horses to bring back to Arkansas. I’d never heard of the Heritage Place. The day of the sale, he came to me and said, ‘There’s a horse sale in Oklahoma. Do you want to go?’ We loaded up and came.”
At the 2018 Heritage Place Yearling Sale, with the help of trainer Clint Crawford and Renee Wilson, they selected several horses, including Uncle D for $170,000. He was worth every penny.
Crawford debuted Uncle D in the trials for the Heritage Place Futurity-G1. The colt won his trial and ran second in the final after bearing in.
Uncle D spent the rest of his 2-year-old season at Ruidoso Downs. He qualified for the Rainbow Futurity-G1 by winning his trial. He proved best in the final, scoring by 1 1/4-lengths with Cody Smith aboard.
“He stood there like a champ, and
when the gates opened, he was all business,” said Smith.
Uncle D might have had an influence on the All American Futurity-G1, except for some bad luck in his trial. He bobbled after the start, finished second, and didn’t qualify.
“He actually got clipped and cut his leg,” said Fran. “We had to put some staples in his leg. For him to come in second, we were quite amazed.”
The wound turned out to be superficial, and Uncle D recovered in time to compete in the All American Juvenile. Despite brushing the gate, he won by a neck as the 6-5 favorite to bring his earnings to $682,965.
At the awards ceremony, the Cavenaughs told the crowd how blessed they were to have such a good horse.
“We get the award, but he deserves it because he’s the one that does the work,” said Fran.
