Trump My Record won as early as March at Louisiana Downs and as late as November at Lone Star Park. With eight victories and one second in 10 starts, he triumphed at four racetracks in three states.
The gelding came from a program steeped in Quarter Horse history, being bred in Texas by Fulton Quien Sabe Ranches LP. Cruz Nava bought Trump My Record from the breeder at the 2018 Texas Quarter Horse Association Yearling Sale for $10,700. Trump My Record earned $791,153 in 2019, making him a terrific bargain.
Arturo Davila III, Nava’s brother-in-law, trained Trump My Record during the first part of the season, and Jose Luis Sanchez III trained him for the second part. Davila recalled seeing Trump My Record at the sale, drawn to him in part because he is by Apollitical Blood.
“We loved everything about him,” said Davila. “He looked like he would have potential.”
Trump My Record lived up to that potential from his very first start, when he won his trial for the Harrah’s Futurity-G3 at Louisiana Downs and qualified the fastest. He repeated in the final, winning by a neck.
Moving on the circuit to Texas, Trump My Record did it again, qualifying the fastest for the Sam Houston Futurity-G2 and scoring by a 1/2-length over Pa Cha Ching in the final.
“He’s phenomenal,” said jockey Eddie Sanchez. “I could see Pa Cha Ching coming, but we got to the wire in time. I’m speechless.”
The gelding’s only two losses came during troubled trips in two finals after he had won his trials. He overcame trouble in the Texas Classic Futurity-G1 at Lone Star. Again the fastest qualifier, he kicked the gate during a delay before the start. But he broke well and posted a 1/2-length victory as the 9-10 favorite.
Nava and Davila stood proudly to receive Trump My Record’s championship at the awards ceremony. Translating for his brother- in-law, Davila said, “He is just very happy for having the Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding. He’s only been in the business three years, and he’s been very lucky and very excited.”
