When owner Scott Bryant accepted Flash And Roll’s award as Champion 3-Year-Old Filly, he noted how exciting her racing career had been and said, “We’re going to miss her.”
Janet VanBebber, the chief racing officer for the American Quarter Horse Association, quickly jumped in to reassure the crowd that Flash And Roll is doing fine.
“Don’t think anything sad,” VanBebber said. “She has been purchased and returns home to her breeder, Julianna Hawn Holt.”
Added Bryant, “We’re very glad—it kind of makes the story even better for her to get to go back home.”
Holt bred Flash And Roll in California. The filly is a daughter of First Moonflash out of 2009 Champion Aged Mare Stylish Jess BR. Bryant purchased Flash And Roll for $200,000 at the 2017 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale.
In 2018, Flash And Roll won the Golden State Million Futurity-G1 and Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1. She was named the year’s Champion 2 Year Old and Champion 2-Year-Old Filly, and she repeated as Champion 3-Year-Old Filly in 2019.
“I never would have expected this,” said Bryant in accepting the award. “She’s been such an amazing, all-around great horse to watch.”
Flash And Roll was also honored during the ceremony as a Supreme Racehorse.
Her year began at Ruidoso Downs. While she won her trials for the Ruidoso Derby-G1 and All American Derby-G1, she didn’t qualify for the Ruidoso Derby and encountered trouble in the All American Derby finals.
“She got bumped around good,” said trainer Justin Joiner. “She took it pretty hard.”
The connections sent Flash And Roll back to Los Alamitos, and Joiner diligently worked with her.
“The first couple of weeks down here, I was just trying to put her back together and really hoping that it didn’t affect her mentally,” he said. “Sometimes a change of environment really helps.”
It certainly did. Flash And Roll responded with a gutsy neck victory in the Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1 over Powerful Favorite. In doing so,
she became the first horse ever to win the Golden State Million Futurity, Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, and Los Alamitos Super Derby.
Flash And Roll wins the Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1.
