LET THERE BE SOUNDsi 110, $172,941
Distance Champion
Breeder: Black Oak Farm
Owners: Louis & Corrine Howard Trainer: John Stinebaugh
Jockeys: Gilbert Ortiz, Stormy Smith
2019 Record: 3-3(2)-0-0, $104,191, AQHA Dist. Chal. Champ.-G1, Downs at Albuquerque Dist. Chal.-G3.
Let There Be Sound started only three times during 2019, but he made every one of them count and turned in a perfect record.
It took Let There Be Sound several years to come into championship form. Trainer John Stinebaugh complimented owners Louis and Corrine Howard for having patience with the gelding.
“He had a lackluster 2-year-old year,” said Stinebaugh. “He started running as a 4 year old a little bit.”
Black Oak Farm bred Let There Be Sound in Iowa by breeding the Thoroughbred
mare Sakakawea to the Quarter Horse sire One Famous Eagle. Let There Be Sound ran second four times in six starts at 2, though those starts did include trials for all three of the major futurities at Ruidoso Downs.
Let There Be Sound didn’t break his maiden until his 13th start, in his final race at 3 in 2017 at Zia Park. In a harbinger of things to come, he did it in his first attempt at 870 yards. He hasn’t tried anything shorter since then.
At 4 in three starts, Let There Be Sound became a stakes winner. He collected the 870-yard 2018 Bill Reed Memorial Stakes at Ruidoso Downs in his final start of that season.
Stinebaugh unveiled Let There Be Sound
at 5 in the July 28 Downs at Albuquerque Distance Challenge-G3. Drawn outside,
the gelding bounded to the front and led throughout, crossing the wire 2-lengths in front.
A Sept. 21 allowance race at Zia Park proved tougher. Let There Be Sound again led almost throughout, but his rivals closed rapidly. Three necks separated the first four finishers, with Let There Be Sound emerging victorious.
In the Oct. 26 Cox Ranch Distance Challenge Championship Stakes-G1 at Albuquerque, Let There Be Sound again drew outside. He went off as the 2-1 second choice to Ms Esther. Let There Be Sound raced on the lead while Ms Esther came from well back. The mare tried to catch Let There Be Sound, but he kept on going, winning by 3/4-length.
“He’s really, really a good horse,” said Stinebaugh.
