It is particularly satisfying to win a championship with a homebred, and even more so when a breeder has developed a female family for generations.
Jahree Standridge bred and races Champion Aged Stallion Admiral Sting, a family she has cultivated for decades. Standridge bred Olenes Gamble, the third dam of Admiral Sting,
in partnership with her son Gary and raced the mare solely in her own name. A modest winner, Olenes Gamble produced Sting Baby Sting, campaigned by Mike Vaughan, another of Standridge’s sons. Sting Baby Sting in turn produced Sting Scorpion Sting, bred and raced by Mike and the dam of Admiral Sting.
Standridge bred and races Admiral Sting in Oklahoma, and the son of the stallion Apollitical Jess never demonstrated any reason to be gelded.
“He didn’t show any interest in anything other than working hard and being a good horse,” explained Mike Vaughan in accepting Admiral Sting’s Champion Aged Stallion Championship award.
A multiple winner at 2 and 3 in 2017 and 2018, Admiral Sting accomplished his first stakes placing at the end of his 3 year old season, when he ran third in the Oklahoma Horsemen’s Association Mystery Derby at Will Rogers Downs. It was a precursor of the improvement he would show in 2019.
Trained by Eddie D. and Kasey Willis, Admiral Sting won stakes from March through October. He began the year at Remington Park, exploding to the lead in the 250-yard Mighty Deck Three Stakes-RG3 and winning by 3/4-length with regular rider Jimmy Brooks aboard.
Two starts later, also at Remington, Admiral Sting added a second stakes by the same margin. Brooks again piloted Admiral Sting in the Mr Jet Moore Stakes-RG2, and again the colt led throughout.
While he didn’t win during the summer, by fall Admiral Sting was back into form. He closed out the season with a game victory in the 440-yard Two Rivers Stakes-G3 at Prairie Meadows on Oct. 12.
