Leonardo Alcala spent only $11,000 for As And Js at the 2015 Heritage Place Yearling Sale. He not only bought a bargain racehorse, he now owns the Champion Aged Mare of 2019.
“Honestly, she’s just been a great horse all year-round,” said Alcala. “She’s always sound.”
Five Puig Racing LLC bred the daughter of Apollitical Jess out of Oklahoma Futurity-G3 winner Adolph Tres Knockout. James and Marilyn Helzer, who bred Adolph Tres Knockout, consigned As And Js to the Heritage Place sale.
For Alcala at 2 in 2016, As And Js won the Black Gold 350 Futurity-RG3. She added the Oklahoma Horsemen’s Association Mystery Derby at 3 and Easy Date Stakes at 4.
Alcala, who along with Monty Arrossa trained As And Js during her championship season, unveiled the mare at Remington Park in the June 1 Junos Request Stakes-G2. She gamely scored by a head.
“It was our first out, so we just wanted to see what she would do,” said Cristian Alcala, Leonardo’s son. “But we knew we had a lot of faith in the horse, because she’s always giving us her best.”
Arrossa took over her training at Los Alamitos. Against fillies and mares, she finished second in the Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap-G1, and against males she ran second in a division of the Z. Wayne Griffin Directors Invitational.
As And Js earned a berth in the prestigious Champion of Champions-G1, and she acquitted herself admirably in that race. Subsequent World Champion He Looks Hot won over a tough field, while As And Js finished fifth, beating Flash And Roll, the Champion 3-Year-Old Filly of 2019.
As And Js has already returned to racing in 2020. At the first of the year she ran second to Tequila Sangria in the Charger Bar Handicap-G1 at Los Alamitos. She has also started her breeding career, as the Alcalas have pulled embryos from her when she has been away from the races.
With earnings over $500,000, As And Js has certainly proved well worth that initial $11,000 investment.
“We cannot ask for anything better,” Leonardo Alcala said.
As And Js wins the Junos Request Stakes-G2 at Remington Park under jockey Agustin Silva.
