Apocalyptical Jess turned the tables on Flash And Roll in 2019. Both earned Championships at 2 in 2018 and at 3 in 2019. Flash And Roll was named Champion 2 Year Old, but in 2019 Apocalyptical Jess took the overall 3 Year Old title with a near-perfect season—five wins, a second, and a third.
Bill T. Robbins owns Apocalyptical Jess, who was bred in Oklahoma by Robbins’ father- in-law Danny Joe Miller. Miller also bred the gelding’s first two dams, Cassandra Crest and Diamond For Leigh. Robbins had a hand in breeding Apocalyptical Jess because he liked stakes-placed Cassandra Crest and asked Miller if he would breed her to Apollitical Jess and sell the foal to Robbins.
In 2018 Apocalyptical Jess won racing’s biggest event, the All-American Futurity-G1. That earned him the Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding title.
Apocalyptical Jess in 2019 was a perfect two-for-two in his native state, first qualifying the fastest in his trial for the Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Derby-RG3. In the final, as the 7-10 favorite, Apocalyptical Jess scored by an easy 1 3/4-lengths.
In the Ruidoso Derby-G1, Apocalyptical Jess also qualified the fastest. He demolished his foes by 2-lengths. In the final, Flying Cowboy 123 went off the slight favorite over Apocalyptical Jess. Jockey Ricky Ramirez had qualified both of them and chose Flying Cowboy 123. That left Apocalyptical Jess for jockey Tanner Thedford.
Apocalyptical Jess broke on top and battled with Danjer throughout the 400 yards. Danjer never gave up, but Apocalyptical Jess was also determined and scored by a neck.
“We broke good and had a lane to run,” said Thedford. “Apocalyptical Jess did the rest. He is just a class act. Every time I thought they were catching us, A J just dug in a little deeper.”
Robbins was deeply appreciative in accepting more year-end awards for Apocalyptical Jess.
“It means just as much as the first time,” he said. “It’s just been a great year with this horse. We’re so proud of him and everything he’s accomplished. He’s had some great competition out there, and being a Champion again just makes it really special.”
Jockey Ricky Ramirez and Apocalyptical Jess win the Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Derby-RG3.
