MISS ALLURING MENACE
by Michael Compton
Miss Alluring Menace broke her maiden and joined the stakes-winning ranks at the same time with a powerful victory in
the $443,050 TQHA Sale Futurity-RG2 at Retama Park on July 30.
Piloted by Jose Alvarez, Miss Alluring Menace broke even from the 8-post in the 350- yard dash. Once the chestnut filly hit her best stride, she flew down the outside of the track in the lane, engulfed the leaders and posted
a narrow victory at odds of 21-1. The official winning margin was a neck as the eighth fast- est qualifier to the event sprang the upset in :17.948, earning a speed index of 91.
A homebred for Gus Barakis’ Scarlett Hill Farm of Weatherford, Texas, Miss Alluring Menace has now won one of five career starts and boasts earnings of $199,938. She finished second in an eventful trial heat, displaying the same run- ning style—a strong closing kick—to just miss in her July 15 trial heat effort for trainer Judd Kearl.
Bred and raised in Texas and by Scarlett Hill Farm, Inc., Miss Alluring Menace is the first stakes winner produced from the unraced Special Menace Miss. She has produced 100% money earners from two starters.
“She had a very troubled trip in the trials,” said Gus Barakis. “She broke in. The jockey had to check her, and then she bore out after
he corrected her and then went back in behind the six horse. I lost her. I couldn’t see her. And then he brought her around the six and only got beat a short neck for
the whole thing. Judd and
I were thinking that, the way she finishes her races, if she gets a decent break, she should be close.”
“She broke well,” he con-
tinued. “She hesitated just a
touch as the gates broke, but she ran straight as a string. The further she goes, the faster she gets. We are pointing for the Dash For Cash at Lone Star at the end of September at 400 (yards).”
“We’re really breeders,” Barakis related. “Our main focus is on the offspring of our stal- lions. We thoroughly enjoy breeding mares and raising babies. But don’t get me wrong, it is sure nice to win one of these futurities. Our whole family was there, and it was a special feat.”
He added, “Judd is an excellent trainer. He does a tremendous job.”
As for what’s next, Barakis said the preco- cious filly deserves a break following the Dash for Cash next month.
TQHA Sale Futurity run- ner-up Thriving Ivory (Ivory James-Shes Dashin First),
the 10th fastest qualifier, completed a long shot exacta under Francisco Calderon. Dismissed at odds of 16-1, the brown filly showed the way early and was run down in the final strides. She propped past the wire and threw her rider after the finish line. There was a steward’s inquiry concerning
the incident, but no change was made to the order of finish. Bred by Bobby Cox, Thriving Ivory is owned by Angel Hernandez and trained by Angel Sanchez.
Fastest qualifier One Sweet Picky (One Sweet Jess-Sticky N Picky) and Ivan Carnero rallied late to finish third for owner Ricardo Barrera and trainer Rodolfo Sanchez.
Jayronimo (Jess Zoomin-Dashing Patriot) was fourth, followed by Awestruck Favor (Jess Elie-Tres Seis Mischief), RC The Duke (Jodys Money Pop-Movinstraighttoglory), Like A Denali (Jodys Money Pop-Romancing Mary), Maybeyes (Carters Cartel-Streakin Snowlady) and Courageous Flight (Captain Courage-Fly Bonus). Cartel Flash scratched.
