HOT INDY CHICK
by Danny Camp
Despite being narrowly outnodded to finish second in her July 16 trial heat, Hot Indy Chick clinched the fourth fastest qualifying
position going into the Zia Futurity-RG1. In the July 31 finals, Hot Indy Chick
dueled to win the $409,110 stakes event at Ruidoso Downs.
The sorrel filly left the 7-post mid-pack and contested with her trial heat winner, Machismo Moon, who was dueling for the victory. Hot Indy Chick was in fourth at the first call and in third at the top of the stretch. Machismo Moon yielded, and Hot Indy Chick inched away to cross the wire 1/2-length in front.
Hot Indy Chick stopped the clock at :20.162 under the guidance of jockey Jaime Leos aboard. The filly banked first place money worth $171,826 and increased her total bankroll to $173,130. This was the first win in four outs for the two year old, who broke her maiden in this race.
Hot Indy Chick’s connections include owner Jacob J. Simmons, III and trainer Cynthia Gonzales.
Hot Indy Chick was bred in New Mexico by Mike Abraham out of unraced Hot Babe Indy Suds. The mare has produced 100% money earners from two starters, including
stakes placed Cmon Jesses Girl who finished third
in the 2013 Sunburst
Stakes and was a finalist
in four other graded events including the 2012 Zia Futurity-RG1. Hot Indy Chick is the top money earner out of Hot Babe Indy Suds, as well as her first stakes winner.
Trainer Cynthia Gonzales
stated, “Indy is getting better
and better with every race. She is just now starting to mature and figure things out.
“She is a happy horse and easy to be around,” Gonzales added. “She seems to like her job and enjoys a morning gallop and is good in the gates. She came back from the race a tired girl, but she cleaned up her feed. She is absolutely sound, so we are looking to Albuquerque in the future.”
Gonzalez also noted, “This was her maiden victory and we were tickled to outrun the horse that beat us in the trials.”
The trainer also had nice things to say about their rider, Jaime Leos. “Jaime Leos fits this filly really well. They get along good. We are glad to have him on our team.”
Third fastest qualifier Machismo Moon (Heza Motor Scooter-Machi Moon) finished second under Bonificio Perez. The geld- ing narrowly beat Hot Indy Chick in their trial heat for the Zia Futurity. His connec- tions include owners Ramon Alvarez, Joe Alvarez and Ysabel Medrano and trainer Seth Ferguson.
Scooters Debutant (Heza Motor Scooter-Phoebe Wallingford) received
the first call away from the gates and in
the end, finished in third place. Her team includes owner Joyce Darlene Erickson and trainer Donna McArthur. Cesar Gomez was in the irons.
