Bowlan of Bowlan Farm. He asked if we would consider running a Paint, and Dan said, ‘Only
if it was a damn good one.’ Chuck said, ‘I think I have one,’ and he did! At the time, we sent our trainer Warren Conley to look at the horse, and he agreed. It was a great decision: that horse, Treasured Brew—who was by Treasured and out of Froggywentacourtin (QH), a Dash For Cash (QH) mare—won his trial heat in the Oklaho- ma Paint Futurity trial with the fastest time. He later broke loose at the gates and was scratched in the finals, but he came back and won both his trial heat and the finals in the American Paint Classic in 1997. If you ask who is our favorite horse, Treasured Brew was our first favorite!
APHA: Who are some of your other memorable Paint running horses?
Dan & Kaye: Some of our other favorites over the years have been Millennia Flash, by Easily Smashed and out of Scarlett The Har- lot (QH), and Barbwire Bug, by Judys Lineage and out of a Shawnee Bug (QH) mare. How- ever, Elaina Go Go, has a special place in our hearts. She is a Texas Hero x Elaina Sweetness (QH) mare; our trainer Matt Whitekiller found her for us, and she would have to be
our second favorite—she is the dam to our No. 1 favorite horse, CRM Livewire, who is a two-time World Champion stallion by Cartel
Success (QH). His first two crops are on the ground, and we are so excited to see his first foals on the track in the spring of 2017.
APHA: What is your favorite Paint rac- ing memory?
Dan & Kaye: Our favorite Paint racing memo- ry is winning the APHA Masterpiece Challenge at Lone Star Park in Texas with all of our friends and family in attendance—you would have thought we won the All-American! CRM Livewire went from there to win the Talimena Handicap 10 days later and the Green Country, in addition to running second in the Lorelei Derby, all at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Oklahoma. And that’s after coming back from two surgeries for a displaced soft palate, done by Dr. Mike Majors in Oklahoma City (Thanks, Dr. Majors!). After that, we retired CRM Livewire at the top of his game. He stands at stud at Bowlan Farm in Tecumseh, Oklahoma, in the wonderful care of Dr. Chuck Bowlan and his parents, Linda and Henry Bowlan.
APHA: Do you have any special mem- ories of the Oklahoma Paint Futurity, the Pot O’ Gold or the PSBA?
Dan & Kaye: Winning the American Paint Classic (PSBA) with Treasured Brew. These three races are the backbone of the APHA racing industry and have been running suc-
cessfully for many years, thanks to Ray Graves, Henry and Linda Bowlan, and Shari Burger. As owners, we realize the importance of support- ing these programs—if we don’t, we all lose!
APHA: Why do you love Paint racing?
Dan & Kaye: Because of the promotion and beauty of colored Paints. When you foal out a new Paint baby, it is like Christmas—you never know what you will get in the way of color or color pat- tern. It’s always amazing! The sight of color run- ning down the track, in the paddock, and in the winner’s circle, is always a photo opportunity— though we most prefer the winner’s circle!
APHA: How do you encourage others to get involved in Paint racing?
Dan & Kaye: Our philosophy on getting oth- ers into Paint racing is to encourage a new person with the excitement of the races, the color, and the love of horses. We have gotten a few Quarter Horse owners and several trainers to breed to CRM Livewire—that allows them to compete
on a smaller scale against fewer horses in races with growing purses. Anyone who loves racing horses would love to run at purses estimated at $350,000 in the Speedhorse Triple Crown races. The APHA Racing Committee is continually trying to grow the purses—our philosophy is, ‘If you build it, they will come!’
