BRAVE HEART WON SI 101, $88,947
6
Race record: 8-4-1(1)-1
Brace Heart Won’s well-traveled career has resulted in stakes appearances in three states. In his most recent start, he was fifth in the Firecracker Derby at Delta Downs. Last year, he ran second in the Black Gold Futurity-RG1 and fourth in the Southwest Juvenile Championship-G1. On Labor Day weekend, he’ll line up for the richest stakes on his record in the All American Derby, having qualified by winning the 10th trial by a half-length over fellow qualifier Jess Envision. Ridden by Jose Alvarez for trainer Judd Kearl, Brave Heart Won increased his win tally to four with his :21.333 victory. He is previously trained by Michael Taylor, who co-owns the gelding with Dwayne Saucier. Sired by Apollitical Jess, Brave Heart Won was bred by Luis Miguel Albores Gleason. The gelding is a half-brother to multiple stakes winners Zookie Street si 106 ($268,774) and Thru Rebas Eyes si 105 ($168,346, Ntr), among others.
The most lightly started horse in the All American Derby will be A Fulton Classic, who quali-
fied by winning the ninth trial. Juan Torres sent the gelding postward with Jose Ortiz in the irons. Breaking from post position two, A Fulton Classic trailed the early leaders before finding the front in mid-stretch. The 10-1 longshot crossed the wire 3/4-length in front, with his time of :21.351 securing the seventh qualifying spot. Mark Soto owns A Fulton Classic, whose first career start was a fourth-place effort in a trial to the Rainbow Derby. Joe Kirk and Merle Fulton bred A Fulton Clas- sic, who is out of 2000 All American Futurity runner-up Fashionisanattitude si 99 ($422,073). He is a half-brother to multiple graded stakes placer The Steel Wave si 104 ($206,486). His second dam is Panash si 91, a half-sister to Victory Defined si 108 ($177,495).
First Valiant Sign’s career has been all about the Ruidoso Downs Triple Crown races. Last year, the Mike Joiner trainee won the Ruidoso Futurity-G1 before finishing second in the Rainbow and fourth in the All American. The highly regarded gelding missed duplicating that feat this year when he failed to qualify for the Ruidoso Derby after running second in a trial. He returned to place fourth in the Rainbow Derby, and after a second-place effort on August 21, will line up for the All American Derby. Cody Jensen has the mount on First Valiant Sign this year for owners Scott Bry- ant, Joe Dee Brooks, Lee Lewis, Derroll Hubbard and R. D. Hubbard. The Mixer Ranch bred the Valiant Hero gelding who is out of Grade 1 winner First Painted Sign si 103 ($284,911) and is a half-brother to A Tres Of Paint si 98 ($509,184), Apollitical Sign si 88 ($96,523), and others.
One of the most experienced horses in the All American Derby field is Jess Envision, who made his 14th lifetime start in the trials. Saddled by Juan Aleman and ridden by Esgar Ramirez, Jess Envision finished second to Brave Heart Won in the 10th trial to earn her spot in the finals. Jess Envision’s busy career has not been without its highlights. The Apollitical Jess filly ran fourth in the Reming- ton Park Oklahoma Bred Derby-RG3 and was ninth in the Heritage Place Derby-G2 earlier this year. Last fall, she ran 10th in the Texas Classic Juvenile after stumbling badly at the start. Jess Envi- sion is bred and owned by J. Garvan Kelly, Nancy Yearlsey and J. Lloyd Yother. She is out of Grade 3 winner Answer The Dream si 99 ($264,598) and is a full sister to stakes winner Empty Arms si 90 ($25,480) and Grade 1 finalist Treasured Dreams si 90 ($44,055), among others.
CELTIC EMBLEM SI 96, $142,662 10
Like stablemate Jess Envision, Celtic Emblem brings a lot of experience to the plate. The Apollitical Jess filly won the Easy Jet Stakes-G3 at Ruidoso Downs last year, was sixth in the Texas Classic Juve- nile, and eighth in the Heritage Place Derby-G2. She secured her place in the All American Derby with a neck victory in the fifth trial. Esgar Ramirez was in the irons for trainer Juan Aleman. Kelly Yearsley Equine LLC bred and own Celtic Emblem, who is out of Grade 2 stakes winner Three Green Leaves si 106 ($114,908). Celtic Emblem is the first stakes horse for her dam, who has nine winners from 13 starters. Celtic Emblem’s third dam is Grade 1 finalist Sky Chicks si 92 ($47,912), who has produced Dutch Schultz si 99 ($356,668), Spike It And Fly si 104 ($187,652), Rule The Skies si 102 ($29,242, dam of Royal Proclamation si 107, $303,923), and others.
