d with a 2 1⁄2-length win in :21.189, making it the second time this year the multiple stakes-placed filly has led the list of qualifiers to a Grade 1 event. She also won a trial to the Ruidoso Derby by 2 1⁄2-lengths as the fastest qualifier. She finished second to undefeated Jess Good Candy in the finals, and was vanned off in what was her last start prior to the All American Derby trials. Inci- dentally, the filly was also vanned off following her All American Derby trial and will return for the finals. Volcom Bay is out of Miss Lethal, dam of earners of more than $1.2 million, and was bred by P. K. Thomas, who also bred All American Futurity qualifier Volcoms Lady.
Favored EC Jet One dominated the seventh trial under Esgar Ramirez. Despite getting bumped from both sides out of the 3-hole, EC Jet One grabbed the early lead and was never seriously challenged on the way to a 1-length win. Bred and owned by Enrique Carrion, EC Jet One wintered in Florida, where he won four consecutive races, including two stakes, at Hialeah Park. Trainer Judd Kearl said the colt had surgery to remove bone chips following that meet and was being pointed for the All American Derby trials since. EC Jet One won three of five starts as a 2 year old and was third in the Sam Houston Futurity-G2 and sixth in the Texas Classic Futurity-G1. He is the first stakes winner out of the unraced Mr Jess Perry daughter Pretty Girl Perry, who has also produced Alizee, a 2-time stakes runner-up in Mexico. His second dam is stakes winner and New Track Record setter Brasis.
Boogies Special Dash has put together a solid record in 2016 that can only get better on Labor Day weekend. Under Cesar Gomez, the gelding won the 11th trial with a strong late surge that propelled him across the wire 1 1⁄2-lengths in front of his nearest rival. Previously, he won trials to the Ruidoso and Rainbow derbies, and finished second to Valiant Rogue in the Rainbow Derby. His only off-the- board finish this year was a sixth-place effort in the Mr Jess Perry Derby. Previously trained by Kasey Willis and now saddled by Eddie D. Willis, Boogies Special Dash races for owner Kenneth Ruthardt of Bledsoe, Texas. Bred by Jaime Gomez, Boogies Special Dash is a full brother to stakes-placed This Boogie Fires si 93 ($64,040) and multiple graded stakes finalist Fire Specialist si 96 ($49,658). He is out of stakes-placed Boogies Special si 94 ($28,138).
ONE FABULOUS EAGLE SI 97, $576,680 4
In the eighth trial, One Fabulous Eagle scored a hard-fought victory over fellow qualifier First Valiant Sign to earn his spot in the All American Derby field. The colt was ridden by Cesar Gomez, who has piloted him in all eight career starts. Those races have included a win in the Corona Cartel Derby, a second-place finish in the All American Futurity-G1 and a fourth-place effort in the Ruid- oso Futurity-G1. One Fabulous Eagle will try to improve upon last year’s Labor Day results when he goes postward for trainer Eddie D. Willis, who is taking over for Kasey Willis. Darling Farms owns One Fabulous Eagle, who was bred by Christine Hudson. One Fabulous Eagle is a full brother to stakes winner Eagle On The Fly si 103 ($225,644), and multiple graded stakes finalist The Ultimate Eagle si 97 ($129,675), and others.
Several of Judd Kearl’s trainees came into the All American Derby trials fresh, a strategy that paid off in spades with four qualifiers for the veteran conditioner. First Fancy Racy was no exception, as the filly had not started since November of 2015, when she ran fourth in the Texas Classic Futurity-G1 at Lone Star Park. Kearl gave a leg-up to Jose Alvarez at Ruidoso Downs, where First Fancy Racy went to post in the fourth trial. One of two horses to qualify from the earlier trials, which were run on a sealed track in the rain, First Fancy Racy started slow but gained ground with every stride, finishing 2 3⁄4-lengths in front in :21.312. Aldai Transport owns First Fancy Racy, who was bred by Sunflower Supply Co. The filly is a half-sister to Miss Racy Roller si 91 ($81,950). Her second dam is the blue-hen producer and legendary race mare Miss Racy Vike.
