Thirteen trials to the All American Derby-G1 were held on Sunday, August 21 at Ruidoso Downs. The $2.4 million purse is the second-largest purse in the race’s 43 runnings. The richest renewal of the All American Derby was in 2013, when the purse reached $2,809,784.
The near-record purse brought out the nation’s best
3 year olds in the trials, where the total earnings of the trial entrants surpassed $12.3 million. As can happen at Ruidoso Downs, the weather played a role in the results by the end of the day. One of the horses affected was 2015 All American Futurity winner Jess Good Candy, who won his trial in the rain but watched his time overcome by the end of the day.
While Jess Good Candy will be noticeably absent from the finals, two trainers will be hard to overlook. Judd Kearl saddled four of the top six qualifiers, while Eddie D. Willis sent out the other two 3 year olds that made up the top six qualifiers. Juan Aleman also saddled two qualifiers. Jockeys Esgar Ramirez and Jose Alvarez each rode three All American Derby qualifiers, while Cesar Gomez piloted two. J. Garvan Kelly and Nancy Yearsley own or co-own two qualifiers. Apollitical Jess, who has three offspring in the top 10, is the only stallion to be represented by more than one qualifier.
