Susans Violette extended her win streak to three with a wire-to-wire victory in the Dec. 29 New Mexico State Racing Commission Handicap (R) for state-bred fillies and mares at Sunland Park.
Racing for Steven D. Stewart of Albuquerque and trainer Bennie L. “Chip” Woolley Jr., Susans Violette covered 5 1/2-furlongs in :1:03.51, and her winning margin was a nose from Tijuana. Enrique Gomez rode the 3-year-old gray or roan daughter of Stellar Rain.
Susans Violette was bred by Michael E. Malouff Jr. The filly’s sire, Stellar Rain, is an unraced 10-year-old Kentucky-bred son of the Storm Bird stallion Storm Cat and the Grade 1-winning Wild Rush mare Stellar Jayne.
Stellar Rain has sired four winners from 10 starters and the earners of more than $253,000. The stallion is owned by Wendy Davis of Tucson, Arizona, and stands for a $1,500 fee at Terry and Nan Lane’s TNL Farm at Bosque, New Mexico.
Susans Violette is also one of two winners from as many starters produced by Bruisen Susan, a winning 15-year-old daughter of
the Proud Truth stallion Proudest Romeo
who ran third in the 2006 Manhattan Beach Stakes at Hollywood Park. The filly’s third dam, the Darby Creek Road mare Cyard, won the $125,000 Kindergarten Stakes (R) at Beulah Park in Ohio and was a half-sister to the multiple stakes-winning filly K.O. King.
Susans Violette traces back to her fourth dam, Benched, a daughter of Cyane and a half-sister to stakes winners T.V. Card and Noble Card.
Raced exclusively in New Mexico, Susans Violette has won five of six starts, and the $51,000 winner’s share of the $85,000
New Mexico State Racing Commission Handicap purse pushed the filly’s earnings to $184,400, all of which was banked during her 3-year-old season. Her winning streak includes a wire-to-wire, three-quarter length victory in the 6-furlong, $140,000 New Mexico Cup Oaks Championship (R) at Zia Park on Nov. 4.
Pay As You Go finished third, 3 1/2-lengths behind runner-up Tijuana. Waltzing Attila, Explosive Spy, Bryn’s Fancy Pants, Woodacouldadid, Westa, Fast Gator, Mike And Trixie, and Ivy Gimlet completed the order of finish.
Tijuana is a 5-year-old gray or roan Devon Lane mare campaigned by Dale F. Taylor Racing LLC. Tijuana has won six
of 27 starts, and the $17,000 second-place share of the New Mexico State Racing Commission Handicap purse increased her earnings to $261,155.
A homebred 4-year-old daughter of Attila’s Storm racing for R.D. Hubbard, Pay As You Go has won two of nine starts, and the $8,500 third-place share of the purse pushed the filly’s bankroll to $49,585, all of which has been earned during her 4-year- old season.
