Clara Moore Thomas’ Roll On Diabolical began his 3-year-old campaign with a convinc- ing six-length victory in the Jan. 6 Four Rivers John Deere Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred sophomores at Sunland Park.
Ridden by Alejandro Medellin for trainer Tom Pierce, Roll On Diabolical covered 6 furlongs in 1:09.58. The chestnut son of Diabolical scored
his second career stakes win while banking the $51,000 winner’s share of the $85,000 purse.
Roll On Diabolical was bred by Barbara M. Coleman, Brad King, and Todd Fincher. An $11,500 yearling purchase at the 2017 New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs, the colt is one of 12 black-type stakes winners sired by Diabolical, a 16-year-old Kentucky-bred son of the Marquetry stallion Artax.
Raced in five countries from 2005-09, Diabolical earned $1,467,401 from 32 starts, and his five stakes victories included the 2007 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (G2) at Saratoga and Maryland Breeders’ Cup Sprint Handicap (G3) at Pimlico. The stallion has sired the earners of more than $7.7 million from 142 starters, including multiple stakes winners Diabolical Dame, Liberty Lover, and That’s The Idea.
Diabolical is owned by Fred Alexander and J. Kirk Robison, and he stands at Fred and Linda Alexander’s A & A Ranch at Anthony, New Mexico.
Roll On Diabolical is also the first starter produced by Hennesey Smash, a 10-year-old daughter of Roll Hennessy Roll who won four stakes in New Mexico from 2012-13, including the ’12 New Mexico Cup Fillies Championship (R) at Zia Park. The colt’s second dam, the unraced Rare Brick mare Some Smash, foaled
a total of five stakes winners, all of which are half siblings to Hennesey Smash, including 10-time stakes winner Star Smasher and nine- time stakes winner Some Ghost.
Roll On Diabolical’s third dam, the Star De Naskra mare A Smash, won stakes at Albuquerque and Sunland Park in 1985 and foaled stakes winner A Smashing Chance, a half-brother to Some Smash.
Roll On Diabolical has won three of five starts, including the 6-furlong, $178,000 New Mexico State Fair Futurity (R) on Sept. 23, and he has earned $154,450.
Stoney Who finished second and was followed by Sunscreen, Amor N Pasion, Hesa Prospector, Quite Peace, and Diabolical Ruler.
Stoney Who is a homebred son of Quinton’s Gold owned by Sam E. Stevens and Sammy L. Stevens of Lamesa, Texas. The bay gelding has won one of three outs, and the $17,000 runner-up share of the Four Rivers John Deere Stakes purse pushed his bankroll to $28,820.
A homebred Southwestern Heat gelding racing for R.D. Hubbard and Shaun Hubbard, Sunscreen has won three of eight starts and has earned $149,725. Sunscreen’s resume includes a 3/4-length score in the 5 1/2-furlong, $110,000 Rio Grande Senor Futurity (R) at Ruidoso Downs in Sept.
