OQHRA Fall Classic
CHARLIES FURY
by Tracy Gantz
Charlies Fury proved last year that he could win a black-type race at Will Rogers Downs, and then earlier this year he stepped up to a Graded win
at Remington Park. Bettors took note and made him the odds-on favorite for the $21,190 OQHRA Fall Classic Stakes at Will Rogers Downs on Oct. 1. Charlies Fury did not disappoint his backers.
Regular pilot Augustin Silva climbed back aboard Charlies Fury for the 400-yard event. They make a good team, which they demonstrated once again. Charlies Fury broke on top, and while it was close early, he scored by a 1/2-length in :19.742.
Michelle Hurdle trains Charlies Fury for owners/ breeders Tom and Kathleen McNally. The 5-year-old gelding has won four stakes (three at Will Rogers and this year’s Bob Moore Memorial Stakes-G2 at Remington), run second in five others, and finished third in another stakes. He has earned $347,851.
The McNallys bred Charlies Fury out of their winning homebred mare Jess Charlena. She has produced three starters, all winners, including Jess My Hocks, winner of the 2021 Leo Stakes-G1 and 2020 AQHA Derby Challenge Championship Stakes-G3 and Will Rogers Downs Derby Challenge Stakes.
Giant Courage (Captain Courage-Deelish), ridden by Cody Wainscott, owned by Felipe Morales Martinez, and trained by Felesha Gold finished second. The 6-year-old gelding has won five previous races.
James Flores rode BP Primetime (Im A Fancy PYC-BP Southern Mariah) to third for owner H E Racing LLC and trainer Buddy Clay. BP Primetime was coming off a second in the Speedhorse Derby at Fair Meadows.
Completing the field were DF Storm Tales (Wagon Tales-Storm’s Promise TB), Coyotee Dale (Jess Lips-Docs Dusty Dale), and Relentless Doll (Hes Relentless-Lil Miss Party Doll).
