                 Wild West Futurity-RG3
FAMOUS CARMILITA
by Tracy Gantz
Famous Carmilita has steadily improved, from her debut at Weber Downs through two starts at Ruidoso Downs. She hit her stride at Los Alamitos,
qualifying the fastest for the Los Alamitos Wild West Futurity and storming home in the Oct. 17 final.
“Flawless execution,” Los Alamitos announcer Michael Wrona called the Futurity performance. Famous Carmilita and jockey Eduardo Nicasio came away in perfect order. The filly engaged with several rivals and then drew off to win by 1 1/4-lengths in :17.775 for 350 yards.
“She’s improved every single time out since Ruidoso,” said Stan Young of Moonshine Racing, the partnership that owns Famous Carmilita. Young trained the filly at Weber, Bret Vickery at Ruidoso, and Christopher O’Dell at Los Alamitos. Famous Carmilita broke her maiden in her Wild West trial.
Paragon Farms LLC bred Famous Carmilita
in Texas from 3-time winner & Grade 1 finalist Corona Carmelita. She is the mare’s first winner in two starters.
Monty Arrossa trains both second-place Rayshas Kidd Trax (Kiddy Up-Rayshas Pink Sky) and third- place Boondarbian (Jr Dynasty Mountain-Splash Talk). Renegade Racing and Spackman Racing bred and own Rayshas Kidd Trax, who was ridden by
Jesus Ayala and earlier ran third in the Wyoming Downs Futurity. Jerald and Lacie Davenport bred and own Boondarbian, who was ridden by Jose Nicasio. Boondarbian has won once, run second three times, and finished third once in nine prior starts.
Followed by Mister Bigg (Big Daddy Cartel- Sandys Jesse), Richie Rich 1 (Concorde’s Appeal TB-Race To Riches), Zoomin For Trix (Zoomin For Bux-Doing Trix), Hopefulblue (Foose-Chics On Fire), Go Out (Seperate Interest-Im Willie Kool), BNB Lighting McQueen (Coronado Cartel-Optimyze) & Branch Rickie (Heat Warning-A Mere Formality).
Autumn Handicap
LOVELY EVENING
by Tracy Gantz
Prior to the $30,000 Autumn Handicap at Los Alamitos on Oct. 9, Dr. Ed Allred’s homebred Lovely Evening appeared to be a good allowance
runner. But she really stepped up in the 350-yard Autumn Handicap to capture her first stakes victory in her second stakes attempt.
When the gate opened, Lovely Evening came away fourth of seven under jockey Jose Nicasio and didn’t look like she would be a factor. But then she got into the race, running in second place at the first call and at the top of the stretch. She hit the wire with three others together, edging them all to win by a neck in :17.920.
Scott Willoughby trains Lovely Evening, who in five prior starts had won a maiden race and an allowance race. “The filly just keeps improving,” he said.
Allred bred Lovely Evening in California from Moonlight Corona, winner of the 2009 Your First Moon Handicap and Go Josie Go Handicap. The mare has produced 19 winners from 22 starters, including multiple stakes winners Nomadic and Circle City and stakes-placed Stroller. Nomadic and Circle City competed on the same card as Lovely Evening, finishing fourth and unplaced in the Robert Boniface Invitational Championship-G1.
Jesus Ayala piloted Mookkie (Hez Our Secret- Gotcha Bella) to second. Lindolfo Diaz trains the gelding for his father, Francisco. Mookkie has won two races and has never finished worse than third.
Third-place Cactus Jack (Kiddy Up-Bouquet)
is also owned and bred by Allred and trained by Willoughby. Henry Lopez rode the gelding, who ran second in the California Breeders Freshman Stakes.
Completing the field were Up The Ladder (Kiddy Up-Oh La Princess), Rock Candy Blue (Jess Louisiana Blue-Rock Candy SA), After School (Kiddy Up-Study Hall Pierce), and Run By Your Cartel (Corona Cartel-Run By You).
Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap
CHICKS FAYVORITE
by Tracy Gantz
Trainer Matt Fales had the field surrounded in the $25,000 Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap at Los Alamitos. He saddled four of the five horses in the field, and he finished one-two with Chicks Fayvorite and Delila Rose on Oct. 2.
Fales won with his oldest horse in the race, 8-year-old Chicks Fayvorite, owned by Martha Wells, who bred the gelding in California. Earlier this year, Chicks Fayvorite captured the Allred Brothers Stakes at Turf Paradise, and he has placed in four other stakes.
Brushed slightly at the start by Apollitical J One to his outside, Chicks Fayvorite raced in third early for jockey Jonathan Roman. The gelding came on at the end to win by a 1/2-length in :20.158 for 400 yards.
Wells bred Chicks Fayvorite is out of Chicks Tell, a mare bred by the late Schvaneveldt, for whom the race was named. Winner of the 2002 Huntington Beach Handicap for Wells, Chicks Tell has produced 28 winners from 35 starters, including Grade 1 winner Tell Cartel, stakes winners Forrest Fire and My Favorite Cartel, four stakes-placed runners, and a fifth stakes-placed horse that did not win.
Ruben Lozano rode Delila Rose (Carters Cartel-Strawflying Dina) for Fales. Justin Lewis owns the 3-year-old filly, who is still a maiden, though she ran third in the 2020 Los Alamitos Wild West Futurity-G3.
Staubauch (Texas Icon-Girls Rock), who ran fourth in last year’s Schvaneveldt, finished third this year for jockey Jesus Canales, trainer Cesar DeAlba, and owner Gabriel Carballo. The 5-year-old gelding won the 2020 John Ward Overnight Handicap and the 2018 South Valley Futurity.
Bar Fighten (Tac It Like A Man-Watchin The Rain) and Apollitical J One (Apollitical Jess-BP Shes Southern) completed the field. Separate Delight was scratched.
