The track will host 20 special events this year, including Native American Heritage Day, Wyoming Downs Car Show, Kids Stick Horse Races, and Pink Out Day celebrating cancer survivors with the annual “Raysha’s Race.” This year marks the 10th consecutive race season since owner Erick Nelson repurchased Wyoming Downs, which is the only private racetrack in the state. “It’ll be our best season ever,” said Nelson. “Over these past years we’ve increased both the purse size and our season length. . . . The experience keeps getting better for both our horsemen and our fans.”
Ajax Downs Set For First Full Season In 2 Years
Ajax Downs in Ontario, Canada, began its first full season in two years on May 11. The 25-day meet offers 18 stakes events as well as racing around the hook for the first time. Events at the track include Fan Appreciation Day, a Father’s Day celebration, and Family Fun Day.
Remington Park Standings
The Remington Park leaders as of May 15 are: leading owner Dunn Ranch (Matt Dunn) with 11 wins, followed closely by Josefin Guzman with 10 wins; leading trainer Santos Carrizales Jr. with 33 wins, followed by Eddie D. Wil-
lis with 29 wins; and leading jockey Francisco Calderon with 34, followed by Juan Pulido with 29 and Justine Klaiber with 28. Remington Park began their 2022 meet on March 3, which con- cludes on May 28.
2022 Rodeo Hall of Fame Honorees
The Rodeo Historical Society and the Na- tional Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum on May 13 announced the 2022 nominees for induction into the Rodeo Hall of Fame as well as three Award honorees, with the induc- tion to be held Nov. 11-12. The 2022 Tad Lucas Memorial Award honors a living female whose actions promote the values of Tad Lu- cas, a ProRodeo Hall of Fame and all-around cowgirl, and this year goes to Martha Josey,
a World Champion barrel racer. The 2022 Ben Johnson Memorial Award is given to a living individual who represents the Western lifestyle exemplified by the film actor, stunt man and world champion rodeo cowboy, and this year goes to Chuck Sylvester, who was the general manager of the National Western Stock Show and Rode for 25 years. The 2022 Rodeo Hall of Fame Director’s Choice Award is only given under exceptional circumstances and goes to Jeff Medders, the President/CEO of Geronimo Productions which produces many leading sports programs including the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The Rodeo Hall of Fame Class of 2022 includes Guy Allen, Ben Bates, Jerry Beagley, Jake Beutler,
Thelma Warner Cody, Don Endsley, LaTonne Sewalt Enright, Gary Gist, Cleo L. Hearn, Joyce Kernek, Bill Nelson, Tommy Puryear, Tom Reeves Johnnie Ray Taylore, Tee Wool- man and The Kirby Brothers (Butch, Kay
and Sandy).
Record Breaking Average at Triangle Sale
The Triangle Spring Sale in Oklahoma City on April 29-30 registered a 42-year record high av- erage of $14,500 on 367 cataloged horses, less withdrawals. Top sale averages by disciplines are: $33,000 average for reining-bred horses; $24,000 average for cow horses; and $16,000 for ranching and roping horses. The high seller was 2016 red dun gelding Rum Gunner (Colo- nels Shining Gun-ML Boonwith Freckles, Peptos Playboy), consigned by SQ Farms Agent and sold to Ross Falisi for $100,000. The second-highest seller at $76,000 was 2015 sor- rel mare Sugar Railena (Kit Kat Sugar-A Little Reylena, Dual Rey) consigned by Lee Holsey and sold to Jessy Meyer.
AAVMC Annual Report
The American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) published their 2021-2022 Annual Data Report, which showed that total enrollment in U.S. colleges of veterinary medicine rose 4.7% over last year although the number of men enrolled continued to decline and dropped a full per- centage point from last year’s 17.3%. Other highlights of the report show that 3,460 Americans are studying veterinary medicine aboard this year, as well as data on enroll- ment, diversity, applicants, tuition and debt, personnel, budget, and other areas. New QData Catalog App
Formerly Robin Glenn Pedigrees, QData
has released a new sale catalog app called the QData Catalog App, an updated version re- placing the RGP Catalog App. The new ver- sions offers the following: an option to save, sort and email pages from multiple catalogs; the ability to markup, annotate and print pages; share horses with notes and markups on Facebook or via email, text or messenger; vie videos and photos directly from the cata- log page; search by horse name, sire, dam, dam sire, sex, year foaled, AQHA Challenge nominated horses, and consignor; and the ability to rate horses with your conformation evaluations. “Our goal has always been to provide horsemen with innovative market- ing and evaluation tools,” said Robin Glenn, director of QData. “This app is no exception, and it truly provides a one-of-kind service
for horsemen.”
Jockeys And Jeans Fundraiser at Churchill Downs
Jockeys and Jeans will hold their 8th annual fundraising event at Churchill Downs on July 2, the final day of the tracks’ Spring Meet. Seventeen Hall of Fame riders are scheduled to attend the event, as well as two of the five living Triple Crown winning jockeys. All funds will go the Permanently Disabled Jockey Fund (PDJF). Jockeys and Jeans was founded by former jock- eys to raise funds for the PDJF, and the all- volunteer group has raised over $2 million for the charity which makes monthly payments of $1,000 to 60 severely injured former jockeys.
Chavira/Flores Wins 3 at Remington
Trainer Luz Chavira and jockey James Flores each won three races at Remington Park on May 22. Chavira won the third, fifth and seventh races, while Flores, who was the leading rider
at the track in 2018, 2019 and 2020, won the fourth, eight and tenth races.
Track To Tack Incentive
Track To Tack is a non-profit incentive program that gives horses off the race track the opportu- nity to increase their value in the performance horse industry. To be eligible, the horse must have had one official start on the racetrack. Quarter Horses, Appaloosas, Paints and Thoroughbreds are all eligible to participate. The first exclusive race will be held in 2023, but side pots are avail- able in the meantime. $25 entry fee with 80% pay back. The other $5 goes to the non-profit fund for future plans.
