The Favorite Cartel/ Remember Me Rose Nick
Dr. Burns noted that when they bought Remember Me Rose, they had
“hit the right spot” when they bred her to Favorite Cartel. Well, that can be termed an understatement when we see the Favorite Cartel/Remember Me Rose nick. This nick has produced five of this great mare’s seven stakes winners, including three horses that have won a million-dollar race and one runner that has earned over one million dollars.
When we look at the pedigree of this cross, one component stands out and
that is the inbreeding to Corona Cartel. Favorite Cartel is sired by Favorite Trick TB and is out of Shenoshercorona by Corona Cartel. This gives the foals of Favorite Cartel and Remember Me Rose a breeding pattern of 3x2 to Corona Cartel which can be considered inbreeding. Inbreeding is defined as the mating of animals more closely related than the average of the population. Many will say that it is not inbreeding but linebreeding when it is successful and inbreeding
when unsuccessful. But linebreeding is inbreeding, although a less intense form of inbreeding. This 3x2 breeding pattern is a pretty close mating and I generally consider it inbreeding.
When we use the term inbreeding it raises concern as to how it will affect the foal because it can expose genetic weaknesses. Many breeders tend the shy away from it. This prompted me to ask Dr. Burns why he bred Remember Me Rose to Favorite Cartel and the close relationship between the two.
He responded, “We thought that can be kind of close, but it seems Favorite
Cartel crosses well on the Corona Cartel mares. Like, Remember Me Rose and Dr. Allred’s mare Moonlight Corona had two big runners last year. So, they seem to nick with him pretty good.” Moonlight Corona is the dam of Nomadic, winner of the 2020 Governor’s Cup Derby-G2 and Circle City, winner of the 2019 Golden State Derby-G1.
This prompted me to delve into these runners and find out about such things
as racing style and conformation of some of the foals from this cross. That took me to Chris O’Dell, the trainer of Powerful Favorite, Runforyourlife and Bomb Cyclone - all by Favorite Cartel and out of Remember Me Rose. I found visiting with Chris to be very interesting.
Here is how our conversation started. “When we first bought Powerful Favorite in California, he was probably in my top three picks, and we got lucky to get him. In fact, the Rosenthals were late to the sale, and we almost didn’t get him. They got
there while he was in the sale ring. So, we got lucky to get him.
“Powerful Favorite started it and then we weren’t afraid to go back to the well again and had success so why not go the third time,” Chris continued.
“I had success so why not go the fourth time and you know you just got to be strong enough money wise to get the horse because everybody wants it. We had to pay $400,000 last year for Cyber Attack. We are super excited and super blessed with that family. Sometimes you just got to be in the right place at the right time and be lucky. But what a mare. I mean that cross is just amazing.”
Based on pedigree, they are all bred the same way. So, are there any differences? What makes this cross unique? This
is what Chris had to say. “They are all completely different, every one of them. They are not even the same color, not even the same size. I’ve had four of them and I’ve had every one of the colts except for
The close nick between Remember Me Rose and Favorite Cartel is similar to the one found with the sire and Moonlight Corona . . .
