Sunland Park has released its $5.8-million stakes schedule for its 2019-20 Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse meet, which opens Thursday Dec. 26.
Once again, Sunland Park’s stakes schedule will be headed by the 1 1/8-mile, $700,000 Sunland Derby (G3) for 3-year-old Thoroughbreds on the Triple Crown trail. The Sunland Derby will be one of seven Thoroughbred stakes contested on Sunday, March 22. The other stakes scheduled for that date include the 1 1/16-mile, $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks for 3-year-old fillies, and three $120,000-guaranteed stakes restricted to registered New Mexico-breds -- the 1 1/16-mile New Mexico Breeders’ Oaks (R) for 3-year-old fillies, the 1 1/16-mile New Mexico Breeders’ Derby (R) for 3-year-olds, and the 1-mile & 70-yard New Mexico
State University Stakes (R) for 4-year-olds and older.
Other prominent Thoroughbred stakes include the 1 1/8-mile, $150,000 Sunland Park Handicap on Saturday, April 18, and
the 4 1/2-furlong, $150,000-est. Copper Top Futurity (R) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds on Tuesday, April 21.
Sunland Park will offer 29 Thoroughbred stakes worth $3,520,000 in purses, and
15 Quarter Horse stakes offering purses of $2,310,000. The track’s Quarter Horse stakes schedule is topped by the 440-yard, $350,000 Championship at Sunland Park (G1) on Sunday, Dec. 29.
Sunland Park’s richest Quarter Horse stakes, the 300-yard, $400,000-est. New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds, will be run on Sunday, April 19. Other Quarter Horse stakes highlights include the 300-yard, $325,000 West Texas Futurity (G2) on April 19.
With the exception of opening week, Sunland Park will offer live racing on a Friday- through-Sunday and Tuesday schedule. First post time from opening day-February 11 is set for 12:25 p.m. (Mountain time), and first post time from February 14 through closing day, April 21, is set for 1 p.m.
