“To every thing there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven.” (Eccles. 3:1) For 2007 sorrel stallion Apollitical Jess, his seasons have turned from one to another in perfect harmony and purpose. In the beginning, it was humbling. In the height of racing, it was exhilarating. In the season of breeding, it is astonishing. It is a story that has secured his place on the cover of the 2018 Stallion Register.
In the beginning as a newcomer to
racing, Juan Alberto Tirado Lizarraga was participating in the claiming ranks and
a horse he was racing, conditioned by
his trainer Juan Aleman, was claimed for $16,000. Two days later, Tirado claimed Apollitical Time for that same amount. The filly went on to earn over $900,000 and retire as a 3-time Champion. She later became the 2010 Champion Broodmare, thanks to her first foal Apollitical Jess (by Mr Jess Perry).
Under the watchful eye of Aleman, the gangly Apollitical Jess began asserting certain personality traits. The colt was the leader
of the pasture pack. He galloped with little effort. Aleman saw something in the colt, and he wasn’t happy when Tirado said he was putting Apollitical Jess in the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. Tirado wanted $150,000, but the bidding stopped at $100,000 and Aleman told him not to sell. Tirado listened and the rest, as they say, is history – a history that is still in the making.
His first start was humbling. Apollitical Jess entered the gates for his maiden out, stumbled at the break, veered in, and finished a distant last. Next time, he broke inward and bumped at the start, but pulled out a 2nd place finish. Much better. He won his next start by a neck, even though he was knocked into a rival. In the trials to the Golden State Million Futurity, he was bumped, drifted
in and finished 2nd, but failed to qualify. Keep trying. In the trials to the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, he lugged out, lugged in, and still managed a wire-to-wire finish
by 1 1/4-lengths to qualify. In the finals,
more lugging in, but he finished a close neck behind the winner. He ended the year with $333,820. It was a very good start.
Apollitical Jess rested for 6 months, he grew, and in 2010 reached the height of racing. He won his first out in the Ruidoso Derby trials after being bumped and forced into a rival. In the finals, he was sandwiched in at the break and finished a distant fifth. He moved to allowance company, where he won at 350 yards without interference and set a career-high 107 speed index. In the trials to the All American Derby-G1, he won his heat after being bumped and scored the fastest qualifying time to the finals where he finished a game second. Next was a wire-to- wire Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1 trial win. He came back to take the finals wire-to-wire and set a New Track Record for 400 yards. His last race was a win in the Champion of Champions-G1, in which he set a 440-yard New Track Record. It was a race his dam had won in 2002.
For his efforts, Apollitical Jess was named 2010 World Champion, Champion 3 Year Old, and Champion 3-Year-Old Colt. He ended his racing career with 8 wins from 14 starts and $1,399,831. Aleman was sad to see the colt leave his barn, but knew he would have a good second career as a sire.
Apollitical Jess moved to the breeding shed. The stallion has a genetic blend that includes the best of bloodlines with virtually no linebreeding except tracing twice to Easy Jet. By 2-time Champion Mr Jess Perry and out of 4-time Champion Apollitical Time
by Apollo TB, Apollitical Jess compliments a variety of mares.
It was 2014 before we had a chance to catch the first glimpse of his prowess as a sire. His first 2 year olds to hit the track earned over $1.2 million, making Apollitical Jess
the #1 leading freshman sire by money & winners. His top earner was Apollitical Blood.
In 2015, Apollitical Jess was again #1, this time as the leading sophomore sire of winners & money with over $3.6 million.
