MARNEY JO
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
The 14th edition of the AQHA Mexico Distaff Challenge was contested for $409,593 pesos (approx. $21,145 US) and was held at a distance of 400 yards.
The favorite in the betting preferences was Marney Jo, based on her background, her rider and the starting position at the gates, where the competitors soon took their positions.
When the gates opened, they all began the journey neatly. Marney Jo immediately took the lead from the 7-gate and without any pressure drifted towards the inside of the track, passing in front of the group, which was trying to reach her. She and her rider, José Ángel Ambrosio Medina, crossed the finish line 1 3/4-length in front, marking a time of :19.50 for a 95 speed index.
Marney Jo debuted at the Hipódromo de las Américas on March 4, 2018, at the age of three, easily winning the Primer Maiden Stakes and later adding the Felix Bañuelos Jiménez Classic, making this victory her third classic in five starts, with her earnings exceeding 677 thousand pesos.
Her preparation is the responsibility of José Guadalupe García “Lupillo,” but she was saddled by trainer Gonzalo Bastida Pacheco for the event.
Marney Jo is the daughter of leading stallion Corona Cartel and out of the stakes winner/producer Executive Looks, making Marney Jo a full sister to 2017 Champion Two-Year-Old Colt and 2018 Champion Three-Year-Old Colt KVN
