SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
Rachuan serves a wide variety of clientele. “He buys all kinds of horses,” Lowell says. “He’ll buy some of the inexpensive horses and he’ll buy some of the highest-priced horses we sell.”
At the Heritage Place Yearling Sale last fall, his 24 purchases spanned from $5,500 for BP Diamond (Im A Fancy PYC-First Takes All, First Down Dash) to $31,500 for Relentless Sass (Hes Relentless-Dash And Sass, Valiant Hero).
“He’s got a very good eye for a horse and he’s the kind of guy that takes his business
very seriously,” says Butch. “He’ll be there for the first horse and he’ll be there for the last horse because he believes that there are horses that need to be bought in every part of the
sale, and should a horse, in terms of value, fall through the cracks, he’s there to be sure he’s the beneficiary of someone else’s not being there.”
He also buys heavy equipment for Mexico’s construction industry. “But I love horses, so I give much more time to them than to the machinery,” he says. “I will quit the machinery someday, but I don’t think I’ll ever quit the horses.”
SUCCESS AS AN AGENT
Rachuan has developed many skills during his years as an agent. “He does his homework,” says Butch. “He’s having to keep up with pedigrees on both sides of the border, so he has twice as much reading to do as everyone else, and he does it.
“He also surrounds himself on this
side of the border with a good team
for transporting horses and completing transactions,” Butch adds. “Imagine the difficulty of learning the process [of trans- border transport]. He’s a man of innovation and a man of adaptiveness, and he’s an asset to the business.”
He’s also a skilled judge of horses, as evident in the horses he has purchased that have seen success on the tracks of Mexico. “I love buying and selling, but buying
for me is the most exciting thing,” he
says. “I know a good buy and I buy what
I like because then it’s easy to sell; I like
to tell the truth so it’s hard for me to sell something that I don’t like.”

SUCCESS AS A BREEDER/OWNER
Rachuan’s successes don’t begin and end with his service as an agent. He also breeds seven or eight horses a year and keeps two to three a year to race himself, both in the U.S. and in Mexico, where the climate makes match racing possible most every day year-round. “We have five small tracks around Veracruz, and I like to go at least once a week,” he
